ABS and AL Group to Study Methanol Fuel Conversion for Bulker

ABS and Asiatic Lloyd Maritime LLP, member of the AL Group, have signed a joint development project to study the feasibility of converting the fuel system of an ultramax bulk carrier, from conventional diesel to methanol.The study is focused on a series of up to eight ABS Classed ultramax bulk carriers ordered for construction in the New Hantong Shipyard, China, for AL Group.“Converting vessel propulsion systems to take advantage of the decarbonization potential afforded by methanol is going to be an important part of the industry’s green energy transition.

Zero emission is a nice idea, but who’s going to pay for it? The U.S. EPA is readying big money for zero emission ports.The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is working on two high-profile port initiatives that it hopes will move the needle in a big way towards U.S. ports’ zero emissions (ZE) operations and clean air goals.The first initiative started last May when EPA published a request for information and comments that would help the Agency develop Guidance it could use to evaluate funding requests for projects for zero-emission vehicles, port equipment and related infrastructure.

GTT Reports Strong H1 Order Book

French liquefied natural gas (LNG) containment system specialist GTT has posted a strong first-half order intake at the end of June corresponded to revenues of 713 million euros over the 2019-2022 period in its core business, which excludes LNG vessel propulsion systems and related services.The order book at the end of June had increased 27.4% year-on-year to 107 units. Hyundai Bags Order for 2 LNG Carriers from SK Shipping

Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. (HHI) struck a $400 million worth deal to build two liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers for SK Shipping Co., a Korean shipowner. According to the sources, the vessel can carry 180,000 cubic meters of LNG. The vessels will be delivered starting in the first half of 2019, the sources said. Meanwhile, a press release from the French LNG containment specialist GTT said that it has received an order for two new LNGCs (Liquefied Natural Gas Carriers) for HHI. The vessels will be built at Hyundai's shipyard in Ulsan for SK Shipping. Delivery is scheduled in 2019. The vessels, designed according to the new IGC standards published in 2016, will be equipped with GTT's Mark III Flex membrane technology.

GTT Receives Order for Two LNG Carrier Newbuilds

GTT has received an order from Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) for two new liquefied natural gas carriers (LNGCs) to be built at HHI’s shipyard in Ulsan for SK Shipping, a Korean shipowner. Delivery is scheduled in 2019. The vessels, designed according to the new IGC standards published in 2016, will be equipped with GTT's Mark III Flex membrane technology. Mark III Flex is particularly well-suited for the highly efficient XDF propulsion system installed on SK Shipping's LNG carriers, as the technology offers a high level of insulation performance. “GTT is very pleased to continue our collaboration with HHI. Key finding is that demand for the deep sea trades could grow significantly if LNG bunkers are competitively priced compared with other fuel options. The 52-page study, which is being launched at Gastech 2012, assesses the likely scale of demand for LNG fuel and LNG-fuelled newbuilds using a unique interactive model of data drawn from major industry stakeholders. The 2011-2012 study says global acceptance of LNG as a marine fuel will depend on the development of a global bunkering infrastructure as well as viable pricing.
