India’s largest container port, the Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT), said it aims to grow as one of the top 10 global container ports in the next five years. After announcing his 'Make in India' vision plan, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi's first port of call was JNPT, the biggest port for handling container traffic in the country. The foundation stone for the first leg of the $800 million multi-product Special Economic Zone SEZ project was laid on August 16. The project will develop free trade warehousing zones for engineering goods sector, textile and other sectors. The JNPT SEZ will come up over 277 hectares of land near the port as a self-sustainable integrated development project with a potential to generate around 150,000 jobs.

Port Everglades is planning for the year 2033 with an updated roadmap for future growth over the next 20 years that identifies $1.6 billion in capital investments to improve productivity for cargo, cruise and petroleum businesses that operate at the South Florida seaport. The Broward County Board of County Commissioners, which governs the Port as a self-funded enterprise fund, approved the Port Everglades 2014 Master/Vision Plan today during its regularly scheduled meeting. Over the past year, Port staff and maritime consultant AECOM Technical Services, Inc. held more than 20 meetings with customers, stakeholders and the general public to develop the Plan. “This is the second update to the original Master/Vision Plan that was adopted in 2006.

The Port of San Diego apprises it is to host separate open house events for the public to provide feedback on its long-range vision and 'Integrated Port Master Plan Update' process. The Port of San Diego, the fourth largest in California, is in the midst of developing a 50-year Vision Plan as part of the Port Master Plan Update to help set the course for future land and water uses in San Diego Bay. At each open house, port consultants will present an overview of the Vision process and input received over the last six months during the first-phase visioning effort.

Port Everglades experienced a third quarter of double-digit growth in containerized cargo over the same time period last year, which officials believe is a positive sign of economic recovery in South Florida. Container cargo throughput in TEUs, or "20-foot equivalent units," which is the cargo industry's standard container measurement, increased 10.6 percent during the third quarter of the fiscal year, April through June 2011, compared to the same period last year. For the first nine months of the Port's fiscal year ending June 30, 2011, TEUs totaled 674,675, up 12.1 percent, up from the 601,771 TEUs the previous year. The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) and Port Everglades renewed their strategic alliance with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). First signed in August 2009, the MOU, which is renewable for five years, solidifies both entities’ dedication to growth and best customer practices. “Our partnership furthers our shared goal of promoting trade growth in Panama and Florida,” said ACP Administrator/CEO Alberto Alemán Zubieta. Areas of cooperation between the ACP and Port Everglades include joint advertising programs, data interchange and competitive market analyses of the shipping industry. This alliance will also continue to promote the “All-Water Route,” the route from Asia to the U.S. East Coast via the Panama Canal.

A mega-size cargo ship, the largest container cargo ship in the history of Port Everglades, arrived in South Florida this morning carrying cargo from Northern Europe to South Florida. Mediterranean Shipping Company's MSC Maeva - a 1,066-foot-long, 140-foot wide, 89,954-gross-registered-ton containerized cargo ship - is the first of three ships in its class that will carry cargo to and from Port Everglades as part of a weekly ocean shipping service. Previously, the largest container ships to call at Port Everglades were from an MSC vessel class of 997 feet long and 73,819 gross registered tons.

Crowley Liner Services is expanding at Port Everglades with a new 10-year terminal lease that calls for additional acreage and increased container guarantees. "Crowley Liner Services is a success story for the Southport area, which was expanded in 1997 when Broward County purchased additional acreage for container handling," said Port Everglades Director Phil Allen. The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Port Everglades yesterday. ACP Administrator/CEO Alberto Alemán Zubieta and Port Everglades Director Phillip C. Allen signed the MOU during a ceremony held in Panama, agreeing to encourage new business and trade between both organizations. By signing the MOU, the ACP and Port Everglades agree to exchange information about their latest modernization efforts. The ACP and Port will also work together to promote maritime trade.
