Loch Ness Monster: Incat Crowther Joins the Search

Incat Crowther has entered into a contract to design a 20m catamaran passenger ferry to ply the waters of Loch Ness in Scotland, taking tourists in search of Nessie, the lake’s the famous monster. Construction of the vessel for Cruise Loch Ness is underway at Exeter Fabrication Ltd in England. The vessel will be the first vessel to be fully designed in Incat Crowther’s Europe office, providing a full service from preliminary design through to functional and production design. In addition to regulatory guidance, the preliminary design phase included an analysis of the vessel’s platform, with a narrow-beam catamaran was proposed, giving good efficiency whilst allowing the vessel to access the loch via a canal and lock.

Volvo Penta D13 MG Genset Engine

The new Volvo Penta D13 MG marine genset offers more power and high load acceptance, with emission levels in compliance with EPA Tier 3 and low fuel consumption. The secret is the advanced technology Volvo Penta uses throughout the engine. As with all Volvo Penta marine gensets, the D13 MG is delivered complete with electric generator and onboard electronics, tested and classified. Fuel cost alone is a very high portion of a marine genset life-cycle cost. EMS 2, the engine control system developed by Volvo, regulates fuel injection and monitors engine conditions. The system controls the unit injectors, one per cylinder, which operate at a pressure of as much as 2000 bar and atomize the fuel for optimum combustion.

Volvo Penta Tier 3 Heavy-Duty Engine

The new Volvo Penta D13 MH for medium- and heavy-duty marine commercial applications is a powerful and fuel-efficient Tier 3 engine. This 13-liter diesel engine combines the best of two worlds: the exceptional durability, low fuel consumption and minimal emissions that come from its automotive background and the high torque and power brought by the thorough marinization. D13 MH is available in five models with outputs from 400 to 600 hp. “The focus when developing the D13 MH was to offer a Tier 3-compliant marine diesel engine that also had lower fuel consumption, more power-to-volume and even higher durability than the current D12,” said Gerard Törneman at Volvo Penta. High torque at low rpm is a Volvo Penta hallmark and the D13 excels here.

The development of the Damen Stan Tug range of workboats has a history that dates back to the formation of Damen Shipyards in 1969. In those early days, among the most important standard designs for serial production were the Pushy Cat and original versions of the Stan Tug. The Pushy Cat and the Stan Tug 1 were popular in the dredging and marine construction industries. The Damen Tugs & Workboats project team has decided to discontinue the Pushy Cat 1204 series and the Stan Tug 1404 and offer one new design in their place, the Damen Stan Tug 1205.
