The Bounds of Arctic Russia Defined
A decree defining the land territory of Arctic Russia has been signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin and published on the Kremlin's website, reports the officeal news agency Arctic-Info. According to the [final] document, the Russian Arctic zone includes the territory of Murmansk Region, the Nenets, Chukchi and Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Regions, the municipal formation of the the urban district of Vorkuta (Komi Republic), the municipal district of Norilsk, as well as several areas of Yakutia, two districts of Krasnoyarsk Territory and municipalities of Archangel Region. Russia Upgrading Northern Sea Route Safety Infrastructure
Construction of a chain of rescue centers on the shores of the Northern Sea Route has already started. Russia is upgrading infrastructure along the Northern Sea Route. Three large and seven smaller emergency centers will be built from Murmansk in the West to Chukotka in the East. According to a new Russian rescue concept, three main Arctic Fire and Rescue Centers will be set up in Siberia, the North-West and Far East Russia. The rest of the centers will be their subdivisions or branches, said Vladimir Puchkov, Russian Minister of Emergency Situations. Construction of the first centers has now started. One such center with 60 employees is being set up in Dudinka in the Krasnoyarsk Krai. The Siberian center will be equipped with helipads.
Northern Sea Route – Maritime Rescue Centers Planned
The first, in Dudinka, will become operational in time for this year's Northern Sea Route navigable season, according to a report on Russia's 'Arcticuniverse' online publication. Russia is investing in the future of the northern Sea Route and is to spend nearly €23.4 million in development of ten centers from Murmansk in the West to Chukotka in the East. Three of the centers will be located on Chukotka and Anadyr, the other seven in Murmansk, Arkhangelsk, Naryan-Mar, Vorkuta, Nadym, Dudinka and Tiksi. A total of 980 persons will be working at the centers.
