International Maritime Organization (IMO) has been working with southern and eastern African countries to help implement marine environment protection measures contained in one of the organization’s flagship treaties – MARPOL.A workshop held in Mombasa, Kenya (17-19) gathered participants from 12 countries to focus on MARPOL Annexes I to V, and in particular the regulations covering garbage discharge from ships and adequacy of port reception facilities. The participating countries were - Angola, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, Somalia, South Africa, Uganda, Tanzania (United Republic of).Participants discussed factors affecting full implementation of MARPOL and its annexes…

Keppel Seghers Belgium N.V. and Keppel Seghers UK Limited (collectively, Keppel Seghers) have handed over Phase 2 of the Runcorn Energy-from-Waste (EfW) facility, in the UK, to the client. Runcorn EfW comprises two phases of equal capacity. Phase 1 is owned by INEOS Runcorn (TPS) Limited (TPSCo), a joint venture between INEOS, Viridor and John Laing. Phase 2 is owned by Viridor EfW (Runcorn) Limited, a special purpose vehicle owned by Viridor Waste Management Limited. Keppel Seghers handed over Phase 2 to the client on 24 April 2015 after successfully completing a 30-day reliability test. Earlier this year on 18 January 2015, Phase 1 was completed and was handed over. Both phases are operated by Viridor.

Senesco Marine, LLC, a holding of the Reinauer Transportation Company of New York, has been contracted by Covanta 4Recovery, L.P., a subsidiary of Covanta Energy Corporation, to construct six 150 foot container transport barges fitted with cell guides that are designed to carry 48 sealed waste containers each. When completed the barges will service two new marine municipal solid waste (MSW) transfer stations located in Queens and Manhattan, owned by the City of New York and to be operated by the City's Department of Sanitation.
