Vow ASA subsidiary Scanship said it has been awarded a 7.8 million-euro contract ($8.8 million) for its cruise clean ship system with major European shipbuilder.The system will be used for wastewater purification, garbage handling and food waste processing. The Scanship systems will be installed on two mega sized cruise ships entering service in 2026 and 2027, being part of an ongoing six-ship newbuild program from Fincantieri for one of the larger Miami based shipowners. Scanship has previously entered into contracts for the other ships in the program.

Work is underway to retrieve dozens of containers lost from a containership off the coast of Australia, with the first boxes raised to the surface this week. The first container was recovered from the seafloor on Monday using a hydraulic crane and rigging, remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROV) and a specially manufactured steel basket, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority said. The port of Amsterdam said that Several new berths have been added for inland shipping in the mouth of the Afrikahaven (Afrika Harbour).The berths, which became operational last week, are specially designed for tankers carrying flammable materials (marked by a blue cone symbol).The addition of the new berths became necessary when the existing berths designated for these types of vessels were removed due to the construction of new – or extensions to existing – terminals. Ecoslops, an innovative technology company that upgrades ship-generated hydrocarbon residues, or “slops”, into valuable new fuels and light bitumen,  has  announced the formal application to the French competent authorities for an authorization to operate an oil residue waste-processing unit at La Mède, near Marseilles in partnership with Total group. Within this partnership, in which Ecoslops will get a majority stake, and as soon as a unique authorization is given (building and operation permits), the building of a micro-refinery unit with a 30,000 tons per year capacity should start mid 2018. This unit should be operational by the end of 2018.

Ecoslops, a company that upgrades ship-generated hydrocarbon residues, or “slops”, into valuable new fuels and light bitumen, said is has signed an agreement with TOTAL Group to set up a maritime transport induced oil residue waste-processing unit at La Mède, near Marseilles in the Bouches-du-Rhône. The agreement comes after the completion of technical and commercial studies, which commenced last year and were announced as a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in September 2016. ECOSLOPS will build and operate the micro-refinery in La Mède, while TOTAL will provide services and all necessary utilities. The valuable commercial products (new fuels and light bitumen) produced by the unit will be sold on local or international markets.

"During three days, we checked whether 30 vessels had the correct documentation. In 12 cases, documents were forged, or the environmental law was violated," Hans Tuinder, head of the Criminal Investigation department for the Marine Police, told Xinhua. Over 22,000 vessels are bunkered in the Netherlands annually, taking in around 13 million tonnes of fuel in total. The port of Rotterdam is a major trading location, the source of around 88 percent of all bunker fuel. A study conducted by the scientific institute CE Delft last year showed some ocean-going vessels were bunkered by fuel oil contaminated with hazardous waste materials. Fuel oil "naturally" contains a variety of hazardous substances in high concentrations.
