NYC Jobs Plan Aims to Bolster Freight Network
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio today unveiled a series of initiatives aiming to spur 100,000 high-paying jobs over the coming decade across a number of sectors, including the City's maritime and intermodal freight and logistics industries. As part of the New York Works plan, the city will implement a multipronged strategy called Freight NYC that seeks to create 4,000 freight network industrial jobs by building more shipping and distribution infrastructure to connect NYC to the nation’s Marine Highway.
AWO Congratulates Jaenichen on MARAD Confirmation
The American Waterways Operators, a 350-member trade association representing the U.S. tugboat, towboat and barge industry, has offered its congratulations to Paul “Chip” Jaenichen on his successful Senate confirmation as U.S. Maritime Administrator. “Administrator Jaenichen has shown tremendous leadership in his role as Acting Administrator and AWO members are very pleased that he has been confirmed by the Senate to lead the Maritime Administration,” said Jennifer Carpenter, AWO’s Executive Vice President. “Administrator Jaenichen understands the importance of the tugboat, towboat and barge industry and the vital role our members play in moving the nation’s commerce safely and efficiently,” Ms. Carpenter continued.
AWO Celebrates 70th
The American Waterways Operators celebrates its 70th anniversary as a trade association, founded on May 20, 1944, to advocate for towboat and barge operators in response to changing national transportation needs and the new regulatory climate emerging during World War II. The association has grown into a national organization representing tugboat, towboat and barge operators on the inland waterways, along the coasts, on the Great Lakes, and in ports and harbors around the country.
