The U.S. Navy has long valued the potential of additive manufacturing (AM) and 3D Printing.AM refers to the depositing of material layer by layer to create an object. For the Navy, it’s not practical to carry every replacement part for every system on a ship, and it can be difficult to forecast if or when parts will fail. AM provides a flexible source of supply in being able to make parts instead of ordering them and waiting for them to arrive, especially for warships at the far end of the supply chain.

U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68) has received a massive upgrade to its network infrastructure February 16 in order to increase the ship’s operational efficiency, security and communication capabilities. Today, at the ITS World Congress and Exhibition, Xerox and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), both leaders in transportation solutions, signed a Memorandum of Understanding to explore, globally, on a case-by-case basis, potential joint Intelligent Transport System (ITS) opportunities. "The ITS offerings of Xerox and MHI complement one another," said Ken Philmus, senior vice president, Transportation Services, Xerox. The parties will focus on electronic collection, telematics and intelligent parking in which Xerox has proficiency in back-end software and operations, predominantly in the Americas and Europe, while MHI has strength in front-end hardware and maintenance, predominantly in Japan and Asia.

The U.S. Navy has awarded Xerox a ten-year contract worth US$94-million for the onboard document needs of its vessels worldwide. The Navy will look to Xerox for the installation, training and supplies procurement of the multifunction printers (MFPs) and production devices across its fleet. 18 Xerox technicians will be deployed with the ships to provide onboard document management services and support. A major contributor to Xerox’s contract win is the advanced security provided by the company’s office devices. The MFPs are equipped with Xerox Secure Print , which requires a personal identification number for users to release documents. A front-panel PIN code authentication also protects access to the devices’ features.

GAC Singapore is marking the 30th anniversary of its establishment by relocating to a new head office to enable future expansion of its operations. The company, which has expanded its portfolio of services since its establishment as a ship agent in 1981, now employs 145 staff at four locations in Singapore, and is looking to expand further in 2012. An increase in business is expected as a result of a number of major infrastructural improvements in the pipeline for Singapore. These include a new LNG terminal on Jurong Island due to begin commercial operations in 2013, and the opening of Singapore's International Cruise Terminal (ICT) later this year.

Xerox Corp., McLean, Va., is being awarded a $19,409,029 firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract for ship board copiers, print ship equipment, and related support services to the entire Navy fleet. This contract contains options which, if exercised, will bring the total value of this contract to $ 93,892,161. Work will be performed in Norfolk, Va.; Mayport, Fla.; San Diego, Calif.; Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; Puget Sound, Wash.; Pascagoula, Miss.; Manama, Bahrain; and Yokosuka, Japan, and work is expected to be completed in September 2008. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. This contract was competitively procured via posting to Navy Electronic Commerce On-line, with one offer received.
