MOL to Migrate Fleet to 6GB FleetBroadband Plan

Inmarsat say that MOL Ship Management has commenced migrating over 100 vessels to the FleetBroadband 6 gigabyte (GB) plan for the primary purpose of enhancing both crew welfare and business operations. The decision to upgrade was made following a trial period on several selected vessels. “Any FleetBroadband user can quickly and easily upgrade their plans without additional capital investment and data usage can be shared across vessels,” said Frank Coles, President of Inmarsat Maritime. Inmarsat, a provider of global mobile satellite communications services, has announced that global shipping company MOL Ship Management Co. Ltd. have commenced migrating over 100 vessels to the FleetBroadband 6 gigabyte (GB) plan for the primary purpose of enhancing both crew welfare and business operations. Thrane & Thrane Starts Sailor 500

Thrane & Thrane started delivery of 200 Sailor 500 FleetBroadband terminals for implementation by partner, Polaris Electronics aboard the Maersk Line fleet. The roll-out follows shortly after A.P. Moller - Maersk signed a significant contract with Polaris Electronics for the supply of the terminals. Delivery completion is expected end October 2010. Marlink Enhanced Wavecall (TM) Services

Marlink, the maritime satellite communications provider, will announce new features for its WaveCall(TM) VSAT solution at Ft Lauderdale International Boat Show. The company has introduced automatic roaming and Committed Information Rates (CIRs) to enable users to seamlessly roam between Ku-band coverage spots as well as benefit from increased bandwidth for Internet browsing and calling. Furthermore, following acquisition of additional satellite capacity, Marlink has been able to enhance its Ku-band services to provide extended coverage in major regions throughout the world.

SATCOM Battle Heats Up

The evolution of satellite communication use at sea closely mirrors that of land-based communication trends: a never-ending quest for speed, reliability and lower costs. While it is foolhardy to select this or any other single technology as the one with the greatest impact on the maritime industry, a strong case could be made for satellite communication. Prior to the introduction of radio, maritime communication was generally limited to line-of-sight visual signaling during clear weather, plus noise-makers such as bells and foghorns. The advent of radio greatly reduced the isolation of ships during emergencies and was quickly responsible for saving thousands of lives. The first ship-to-shore, two-way radio conversation reportedly occurred in 1922, between Deal Beach, N.J., and the S.S.

Xantic To Offer Fleet 33, Fleet 55 Services Globally

Xantic has become the first company to announce the availability of the new Fleet 33 and Fleet 55 services. Last Friday a contract was signed with Nera for upgrades of both Xantic Land Earth StationsLES’s in Holland (Burum) and Australia (Perth). The services will be available early April and will be provided in the 4 Ocean regions. At the same time Xantic’s Fleet 77 service will be enhanced by the addition of a 9.6k fax channel. Fleet 33 / Fleet 55 are the new Inmarsat services specifically targeted at smaller vessels who have data requirements. Prime segments include yachts, fishing, coast guards and coastal commercial coastal vessels operating within the Inmarsat spot beams.
