USACE Completes Dredge Hurley Extension

Hurley complete and ready for work.

The Corps of Engineers Memphis District Ensley Engineer Yard (EEY), in partnership with the Corps of Engineers Marine Design Center (MDC) in Philadelphia, Pa., completed the lengthening of the Dredge Hurley by 48-feet. The project increased the dredge’s length from 305 to 353 feet, making it one of the largest vessels on the river and increased the dredge’s dredging depth from 40 to a maximum of 75 feet. New USACE Contracts

Dutra Dredging Co., San Rafael, Calif., was awarded on May 15, 2009 an $18,224,915 firm-fixed-price contract for Harbor Improvements Phase III, St. Paul, Alaska, St. Paul, Alaska Dredging approximately 150,000 Cubic Yard (CY) for the entrance channel, maneuvering area, mooring area, and the intertidal beach area, dredging approximately 27,000 CY for the breakwater berth dredge area (optional item), demolish an existing rubblemound breakwater, construct a 435-foot long rubblemound breakwater (attached) in the existing harbor, construct a 160-foot long rubblemound breakwater (detached) in the existing harbor, construct a 485-foot long rubblemound circulation berm in the existing harbor. Work is to be performed in St. Paul Island, Ala., with an estimated completion date of Jan. 25, 2012.

Smit To Cut Costs, Focus On Growth Markets

Dutch shipping group Smit Internationale NV will continue cost-cutting in 2001 and put more focus on growth markets. "Our company should become more transparent and the risk profile of our market groups and activities should be clear," Chief Executive Nico Buis said. He declined to elaborate until decisions on the company's "sharpened strategy" are made by this summer, but added the number of business units would be cut. Earlier on Friday, Smit posted total 2000 net profits of 14.2 million euros ($12.5 million), down from 25.5 million in 1999. Last year, Smit had already predicted a substantial profit fall as the maritime contracting markets had slumped. In December it said it would reorganize various units.

Unitor Secures Significant Orders

Unitor, Norway's international ship supply specialist, has garnered its largest ever single order for ships equipment with a $6.8 million contract from Poland's Stocznia Szczecinska SA (Szczecin Shipyard) for nitrogen generator systems for eight 40,000-dwt chemical tankers under construction at the yard. The order encompasses the delivery of Unitor's 35-ton, hollow-fibre, air separation nitrogen generator system, to each tanker comprising four 360 kW compressors and nitrogen generators producing 3,750 cu. m. of 95 percent pure nitrogen/hour. The eight IMO Class II vessels, which are reportedly the most sophisticated of their type, will be delivered between January 2001-June 2003. The company's marine contracting division also landed insulation contracts by various U.K.
