One Year After Hurricane Harvey, AWO Chairman Touts Houston Recovery; Tugboat, Towboat and Barge Industry Resiliency.During their recent 2018 Fall Convention in Houston, the members of The American Waterways Operators, the national trade association representing the U.S. tugboat, towboat and barge industry, heard from AWO Chairman and Houston resident Tom Marian, General Counsel at Buffalo Marine Service, Inc., who reflected on the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Harvey making landfall and the resiliency of both the City of Houston and the tugboat, towboat and barge industry nationwide.

San Jacinto College and the Seamen’s Church Institute will host e-Navigation Underway (North America) 2016, the third in the annual North American series of conferences focusing upon the development and application of e-navigation. The event will be held at the San Jacinto College Maritime Technology and Training Center, La Porte, Texas, a new facility that opened in Spring of this year. e-Navigation is an initiative of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the goal of which is to provide a decision support environment for the maritime community.

International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General Kitack Lim has highlighted the crucial work of maritime training institutes to train and equip new generations of seafarers and other shipping personnel, during a visit (16 June) to the Romanian Maritime Training Centre CERONAV, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary. During the formal festivities, Mr Lim congratulated CERONAV for its work in training seafarers during the past four decades and commended Romania for its active and enthusiastic participation in the IMO Maritime Ambassadors Scheme, with the appointment of three Romanian IMO Maritime Ambassadors, who are helping to promote seafaring as a career and raise the visibility of the shipping industry.

A naming ceremony was held on April 22, 2016 for Svitzer Deben, Svitzer’s new Damen ASD 3212 80-metric-ton bollard pull escort tug for the Port of Felixstowe. Marc Niederer, Managing Director of Svitzer Europe, hosted the naming ceremony, which saw Svitzer Deben blessed by Sister Marian Davey before Alyson Cheng, wife of Clemence Cheng, CEO of Hutchinson Ports UK, named the tug. Representatives from all parties in the Port of Felixstowe and Harwich Haven Authorities joined the celebrations. Built at Damen Song Cam Shipyard in Vietnam, Svitzer Deben was delivered earlier this year to the expanding Port of Felixstowe, which has attracted regular calls from some of the world’s largest container vessels.

On Thursday, March 19, 2015, Arthur H. Thomas, Sr., president and CEO of Helix Alliance, Inc., received the Chapel of Four Chaplains Legion of Honor Award. The award was presented by retired Capt. Louis Cavaliere, U.S. Navy, chairman of the Four Chaplains Memorial Foundation, and George DuBois, chapel trustee, and mentor to the shipping community. The presentation was made at a joint meeting of the Propeller Club of Jacksonville and the Navy League. Cavaliere cited Thomas’ participation in numerous charitable organizations, including the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and American Diabetes Foundation, through his position as chief operating officer at Solutions Through Advanced Research, Inc. (STAR), a Jacksonville company active in pharmaceutical research and clinical trials.

Seventy-five Crowley Maritime Corporation vessels have received the Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA)’s annual Jones F. Devlin Awards in recognition of their outstanding safety records in 2013, honors given during a luncheon held last week in New Orleans, La. Each year the CSA grants Devlin Award certificates to manned merchant vessels that have operated for two or more years without incurring a Lost Time Injury (LTI), specifically highlighting the skills and dedication of the crewmembers responsible for safe vessel operations.

Military Sealift Command oceanographic survey ship USNS Pathfinder arrived in , , to pick up Ukrainian personnel and members of the U.S.-based Institute for Exploration for an upcoming at-sea capabilities demonstration with ’s Department of Underwater Heritage. In April 2008, the Ukranian government invited the U.S. Navy’s 6th Fleet to demonstrate U.S. Navy hydrographic survey capabilities and to help search for SS Armenia, a sunken, World War II Soviet hospital ship. During the at-sea demonstration, civilian surveyors from the Naval Oceanographic Office Institute for Exploration and Ukraine’s Department of Underwater Heritage will work together to search for the downed vessel.

Edmund Porter, of Port de Grave, Newfoundland, started fishing with his father some 35 years ago as a teenager. A few years later, having moved out on his own, he was joined by his wife Marian. In 1979 he built his first vessel, a 33-ft. trap boat. The couple have now shared three decades as a fishing family. This past July, they christened a new boat, the MV Ashton & Cody named after their two grandchildren. The naming of the boat for a new generation is particularly fitting as the boat also represents the new fisheries of Newfoundland. Since the collapse of the cod stocks, fishermen have been turning to shrimp and crab fishing with good success. The 62 by 22-ft. MV Ashton & Cody is a tangible result of that success.
