Austal bags $10m US Navy Contract
Austal announced the United States Department of Defense has awarded Austal USA US$10,252,142 for a cost-plus-award fee against a previously awarded Basic Ordering Agreement. The order provides engineering and management services for advanced planning and design in support of the post shakedown availability for Littoral Combat Ship, USS Manchester (LCS14). Austal will provide program management, advanced planning, engineering, design, material kitting and subcontract management. Austal Launches Trenton (JHSV 5)
On September 30, 2014, Austal USA successfully completed the launch process of Trenton (JHSV 5) - the second Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV) launched by Austal in 2014. This 103-meter high-speed catamaran represents the U.S. Department of Defense’s next generation multiuse platform. It is part of a 10-ship program worth more than $1.6 billion. The launch of Trenton was conducted in a multi-step process that involved having Berard Transportation transfer the ship from Assembly Bay 3 onto a Crowley deck barge, which was then towed to BAE Systems Southeast Shipyard.

On January 16, 2014, Austal USA successfully completed the launch process of the USNS Fall River (JHSV 4). Recently christened, this 103-meter high-speed catamaran represents the U.S. Department of Defense’s next generation multiuse platform. It is part of a 10-ship program, the funds for all of which have been appropriated, worth over $1.6 billion. LCS2 “Light Off” Successful
Sea trials of the US Navy’s landmark Austal-designed and built 127-m Littoral Combat Ship “Independence” (LCS 2) are expected to commence within weeks following the successful light off of the vessel’s main engines. Austal completed light off of the vessel’s four propulsion engines - two 22,000kW GE LM2500 gas turbines and two MTU 9,100kW 20V 8000 M71 diesels - following the fuel load and the testing of all four generators. Austal USA Apprenticeship Program Completes First Year
In June 2002, the fast expanding Austal USA yard, in Mobile, AL, introduced an apprenticeship program to its recruitment efforts. Since then, this program has introduced three classes to its shipbuilding curriculum, which is recognized by the U.S. Labor Board, and has successfully entered into its second year of operation. Shortly after Austal USA opened its new aluminum shipbuilding facility in February 2001, they joined forces with the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce and Bishop State Community College to formulate a 2-year program: Recent high school graduates of Mobile and Baldwin County would be hired as full-time Austal employees (working 34 hours a week in our purpose-built facility) as part of an apprenticeship program.
