Gulf Island Delivers Z-Tech Tugs

American manufacturer Gulf Island Shipyards has completed the second of 10 Z-Tech 30-80 tugs, five of which were ordered by Suderman & Young Towing Co.Once completed, these tugs will be operated in ports on the Texas Gulf Coast by G&H Towing Co, said a press release from Robert Allan Ltd.The Z-Tech 30-80 tug Ted C. Litton evolved from the previous Z-Tech 7500 design for Suderman & Young. Designed and built with a sponsoned hull form, escort capability of the tug is significantly enhanced.The design incorporates the best handling and operational characteristics of both Z-drive tractor tugs, Azimuthing Stern-Drive (ASD) tugs and the unique RAstar series hull form.The new Z-Tech series tugs are intended for operation primarily in major ports and marine terminals.

Gulf Island Delivers Second of 10 Escort Tugs

Gulf Island Fabrication has announced that its Shipyard Division has successfully delivered the M/V Ted C. Litton, a Z-Tech 30-80 Terminal/Escort Tug to Suderman & Young Towing Company.The M/V Ted C. Litton was designed by Robert Allan Ltd of Vancouver, BC. and built at Gulf Island’s, Jennings, Louisiana facilities. The vessel will be operated by G &H Towing on behalf of Suderman & Young Towing Company. Gulf Island is currently building nine (8) sister vessels that are at various stages of construction.The M/V Ted C.

Lockheed Martin Awarded DoD Port Hueneme Test Ship Contract

Department of Defense inform that Lockheed Martin, Moorestown, New Jersey, is being awarded a $12,171,921 cost-plus-fixed-fee modification to a previously awarded contract (N00024-11-C-2300 CLIN 0012) to provide procurement and engineering efforts in support of the TRS-3D Radar installation for the Port Hueneme Test Ship. The work will be performed in San Diego, California (68 percent); Clearwater, Florida (12 percent); Moorestown, New Jersey (10 percent); Washington, District of Columbia (10 percent), and is expected to be completed by December 2018. Fiscal 2014 research, development, test and evaluation funding in the amount of $12,171,921 will be obligated at time of award. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year.

BAE to Drydock 'USS Wasp'

The Department of Defense has issued a $13,895,899 modification to a previously awarded Navy contract to BAE Systems Norfolk Ship Repair, Norfolk, Va., for the warship's dry-docking planned maintenance, which includes maintenance, alterations, and modifications. Cuccias to Succeed Edenzon as Ingalls President

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) announced today that Irwin F. Edenzon will retire on Dec. 1, 2014. Edenzon is currently corporate vice president and president of Ingalls Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries. Although Edenzon will not officially retire until December 2014, he will step down as president on March 31, 2014, and the HII Board of Directors has elected Brian Cuccias to succeed Edenzon in the position of corporate vice president and president of Ingalls Shipbuilding, effective April 1, 2014.

LEEVAC Shipyards Contracted to Build TwoTugboats

LEEVAC Shipyards Jennings, LLC, Jennings, LA, has signed contracts with Bay Houston Towing Co. and Suderman & Young Towing Company, both of Houston, TX, to build two (2) 80' x 38' x 16' Z-Tech 2400 Class Terminal / Escort Tugs. "We are very excited to have this opportunity to begin this partnership with companies like Bay Houston and Suderman & Young" said Christian Vaccari, President of LEEVAC. "These vessels wil primarily service the escort and towing activity in our operations in the Ports of Houston and Galveston," said Mark Kuebler of Bay Houston Towing, Co. Construction for this Robert Allan design will begin immediately with delivery for the first and second vessels slated in June 2013 and September 2013, respectively.

Radiance of the Seas -- A First Class Delivery

Radiance of the Seas, the first of the Radiance-class of ships, was delivered to Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines (RCCL) on March 9. The 962 ft. (293.2 m), 90,090-ton vessel departed on March 11 from Amsterdam, en route to the Port of Miami, arrivng on March 21. The 2,100-guest Radiance of the Seas is designed to sail world itineraries to Alaska, Hawaii, the Panama Canal, Pacific Northwest and the Caribbean. In addition to its slim, yacht like design with many glazed fronts, the ship is driven by an azipod propulsion system, and powered by smokeless, vibration-free GE gas turbine engines. Built according to DNV Classification standards, Radiance was designed in close cooperation with its owners and optimized via computer calculations and model tests.

AMCV Demise Sinks U.S. Cruise Building Hopes For Now

In the fall of 1999, American Classic Voyages (AMCV) announced plans to almost singlehandedly revive the business of building cruise ships in the United States. Critics claimed it couldn’t be done, but the ships steadily took shape on the building ways in Pascagoula, Mississippi. Two years, a sour economy and horrific terrorist attacks later, the dream of building cruise ships in the U.S. is seemingly dead, as AMCV filed for Chapter 11 and the Maritime Administration is unwilling, at press time, to fund the ships further. While the cruise industry was hurting prior to the terrorist attacks of September 11, the industry has been put into a seemingly perpetual tailspin as economic woes and fear of travel have conspired to leave ships far from full capacity.

C-MAP Wins China Shipping Contract

PHOTO: Mr. China Shipping Container Lines Co. Ltd, a subsidiary of China Shipping Group, is one of the largest Shipping companies in China. It owns a fleet of 103 container vessels with a total capacity of over 120,000 TEUs, and is operating dozens of domestic coastal and international routes from China to Japan, Korea, Southeast Asia, Australia, Europe, Mediterranean and North America. In the beginning of 2003, when the construction of their new Xin Series began, it has been decided to equip the 5600TEU vessels with Litton Sperry VMS ECDIS and 4200TEU vessels with KH ECDIS.

Damen Delivers Three ASD Tugs to Kenya

The Damen ASD Tugs 3110 SIMBA III, KIBOKO II AND NYANGUMI II are not the first Damen Tugs to be used in the port of Mombasa. “EL-LAMY”, a Stan Tug 3300 with a bollard pull of 55 ton. § It is used as harbour for import and exports as a gateway to East Africa. For these purposes freighters and container vessels up to 85.000 ton visit the port. § Of even more importance is the function of the harbour as a cruise vessel port. Damen Delivers Tug to Sea Ports Corp.

In March 2004 the Damen Stan Tug 4511 Al Salaam was delivered from Damen Shipyards Galatz to the Owner’s Sea Ports Corporation (S.P.C.) Sudan. The Damen Stan Tug 4511 is the latest member of the Damen Stan Tug series. In 2003 two shorter versions, the Stan Tugs 4011, where delivered to an Owner in the Middle East. Al Salaam will operate at the Beshair SBM terminal south of Port Sudan, where it’s basic functions will be towing, berthing, fire fighting and pollution control. The tug is classified by Lloyd's Register of Shipping for Unrestricted Service.

Meyer Werft Delivers to RCCL

The most recent addition to Royal Caribbean's (RCCL) fleet of vessels is the 90,090-gt Serenade of the Seas, which was delivered to the cruise line by Meyer Werft Shipyard in Papenburg, Germany on July 30, 2003. The third member of the Radiance-class fleet, Serenade, along with its sisterships, is a luxury cruise vessel boasting a very slim, yachtlike design with extensive use of glass on the outside, as more than 80 percent of the vessel's cabins are designated as outside cabins. Serenade features advanced technology designed to make the ship efficient, and to ensure it is as quiet and vibration free as possible. To this end, it features an advanced gas turbine propulsion plant, and its 15 decks employ the latest in sound dampening technology.
