Injured Ferry Deckhand Medevaced Near Galveston

An injured deckhand was medevaced from a ferry near Galveston, Texas, on Thursday, the U.S. Coast Guard said.Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston command center watchstanders received notification at 2:42 p.m. relayed by Vessel Traffic Services Houston/Galveston personnel that a crew member aboard the John W. Ferry Passenger Rescued After Going Overboard Near Galveston

A ferry passenger who fell into the water off Galveston, Texas, was rescued on Monday, the U.S. Coast Guard said.Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston command center watchstanders received a report at 11:30 a.m. over VHF-FM channel 16 from personnel aboard the John W. Johnson, a nearby passenger vessel, who saw an adult male fall off the Gibb Gilchrist ferry in the vicinity of Seawolf Park.Sector Houston-Galveston command center personnel issued an urgent marine information broadcast while an already on-scene 45-foot Response Boat–Medium boat crew from Coast Guard Station Freeport diverted to assist.The RB–M boat crew located the person in the water, pulled the individual aboard and transferred the man to awaiting emergency medical services personnel at Coast Guard Station Galveston.

WNY Victims Honored at Memorial Service

Family, friends and co-workers of the 12 people killed in the Sept. 16, 2013 shooting at the Washington Navy Yard (WNY) gathered for a memorial ceremony at Marine Barracks Washington. The memorial honored the service and sacrifice those killed in the incident:

This Day in Coast Guard History – Nov. 13

1883-At 1 o’clock in the afternoon, the sloop Madge Schults , capsized as she was passing in through Rockaway Inlet, about half a mile distant from the Rockaway Point Station (Third District). The man clung to the bottom of his craft and made signals for help. They were quickly seen by the lookout at the station and the life-saving crew went off in their boat. He was taken from the water and landed on Barren Island. 1944-The Coast Guard-manned frigate USS Rockford, in concert with the Navy minesweeper USS Ardent, attacked and sank the Japanese Navy submarine I-12 mid-way between Hawaii and California. There were no survivors. In sinking I-12, Ardent and Rockford unwittingly avenged the atrocity I-12 had perpetrated on 30 October 1944 when, after sinking the Liberty Ship John A.

McClure Secures Port Aransas Ferry Assignment

Alan C. McClure Associates (ACMA), a naval architecture and engineering firm, recently announced that the company has been selected to develop shipyard construction-level detail drawings for the next generation of TxDOT ferries. ACMA will also be responsible for ABS and USCG compliance, as well as weight monitoring for assembly lifts during the construction period. The 160-ft double-ended, geared diesel-powered automobile and passenger ferries will have the ability to carry approximately 28 vehicles and 150 passengers. They will join the fleet operated by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) that offers free ferry service between Port Aransas on Mustang Island, and Harbor Island, a continuation of Texas State Route 361.

Connecticut Launches Maritime Cluster

Connecticut Lieutenant Governor M. Jodi Rell recently announced the official launch of the state's newest industry cluster-maritime- at a ceremony on board the Cross Sound Ferry motor vessel, John H., in New London. The organizational center for the cluster, Connecticut Maritime Coalition (CMC) represents the five components of the industry-transportation, manufacturing and services, recreation, commercial fishing environment-working together to help the maritime companies in Connecticut remain competitive in a fierce global market. "The maritime industry has always been a vital part of Connecticut's heritage and today is one of the state's premier economic contributors," Lt. Governor Rell said.
