Royston Team Worked 24/7 on DSV Engines Overhaul

Maritime Activity Reports, Inc.

March 21, 2013

A team from Royston completes the first stage of a 30,000 hour engine overhaul of a Dive Support Vessel (DSV).

The 98-metre, 4.905 gt, Subsea 7-owned Rockwater 1 had been working in the Irish Sea area and was in Barrow-in-Furness for 18 days of scheduled maintenance.

A nine-man team worked day and night shifts aboard the ship while six engineers at the Royston workshop in Newcastle undertook the machining of components. This included servicing 27 cylinder heads and liners, fuel injectors and the complete overhaul of two turbochargers.

Because the diesel engines are used to power generators the Rockwater 1’s engineering team benefits from being able to vary their running hours and control the service intervals. The Royston team will therefore be able to overhaul the remaining engines during the ship’s next maintenance interval.

R. Royston Ltd, founded over 30 years ago, is headquartered in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK and also has facilities in Perth, Australia that give its service support teams a global reach. The fleet maintenance service is provided for all types of seagoing vessel and for diesel engines on offshore platforms or ashore. The company’s technicians come from a variety of OEM backgrounds and maintain their skills at the highest levels to ensure that even discontinued products remain fully operational.
