Offshore crew transfer company Windcat said Tuesday it had ordered two hydrogen-powered Commissioning Service Operation Vessels (“CSOVs”) from the Dutch company Damen Shipyards, with options for further vessels.The “Elevation Series” CSOVs have been designed by Damen Shipyards in cooperation with Windcat and CMB.TECH. On March 20, 2014, Vietnamese Minister of Transport Nguyen Hong Truong, cut the ribbon for the latest addition to Damen Shipyard Group’s portfolio. Damen Song Cam is a new yard, and is one of the largest in the group and represents Damen’s first formal Joint Venture yard in Vietnam. Damen said Song Cam is considered state-of-the-art, bringing a western shipyard designed to meet European health, safety and environmental standards into a Vietnamese environment. The yard will produce around 40 ships per year in phase one.

The 53,000 dwt bulk carrier, 'Thor Breeze' has been delivered by Ha Long shipyard, Quang Ninh Province to Thailand ship-owners Thoresen Co. Mr. Do Van Thau – the Vice General Director of Vinashin and   representatives of the  ship-owner were present at the ceremony. The double-hulled bulk carrier is 190 m in length, 32.26 m in breadth, 17.50 m in depth and with a 12.60 m draught. The main engine is a MAN B&W 6S50 MC-C 9.480 kW rated at 118 rpm to give a speed of 14 knots. The design was by Denmark’s CarlBro’s and construction was under the supervision of DNV Classification.

Albacore Research Ltd. (ARL) announced the signing of Vinashin Engineering and Technology Joint Stock Company (Vinashin E&T) as the dealer for its flagship ShipConstructor software product for the Vietnam market. Under this agreement, Vinashin E&T will be the sales, support and training contact for ShipConstructor in Vietnam. ShipConstructor is the easy-to-use, AutoCAD-based 3D product-modeling software for the design and fabrication of complete ships and offshore structures. “After testing ShipConstructor throughout our entire company, we were so impressed that we approached ARL about becoming a dealer,” said Mr. Nguyen Duy Hung, Director of Vinashin E&T.

Ha Long Shipyard successfully launched a container ship in northern Quang Ninh Province with its capacity of 1,750 twenty-foot-equivalent units (TEU), which is the biggest container ship ever built in Vietnam. Shipyard director Nguyen Duc Than reportedly said the container ship, named Vinashin Dragon, would be delivered to a local client by the end of the first quarter next year. It is the first ship of a contract for five container ships ordered by Vinashin Lines, and both the shipbuilder and the client are members of the giant Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Group (Vinashin). The 184-meter-long and 25-meter-wide ship, with a tonnage equivalent to 23,000DWT, is worth $36m. Construction of the ship was supervised by Germany's register company GL, and it is equipped with European machines.

Construction of a 54,000-toncargo ship worth $30m started on Feb. 27 by the Ha Long Shipyard in northeastern Quang Ninh province. The H172 freighter, to be built at an estimated cost of around $30m, will be 623 ft. long.It is designed by the Science and Technology Institute of Viet Nam Shipbuilding Industry. It will be built under the supervision of DNV, a registration agency of Norway, and installed with state-of-the-art equipment to be able to go to all seaports all over the world. According to reports, the Vinashin Lines Ltd Co, a subsidiary of Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin), signed two major shipbuilding contracts this week in Hai Phong. Under the first contract, the Ha Long Shipyard will build one 54,000-tonne ship, 190m long, 32.4m wide and 17.8m high, and with 9,480 horsepower, capable of running at 14 knots. Matching the largest ships yet built in Vietnam, the 54,000-ton vessel will be built at a cost of about $30m. The first of a series of 16 Diamond 53 double hull bulk carriers has been launched at Vietnam's Ha Long shipyard. The largest ship ever built in Vietnam, the 53,000dwt Florence is the 10th Diamond 53 to be successfully launched, and 9 of the well-proven modern design are already giving excellent results in service. During the launching it is understood a block tripped and punctured the shell plating over a length of about 1.2m, leading to some water ingress. Water has now been removed and the vessel has been moored safely at the fitting out berth where construction work is continuing. There was no structural damage to the vessel and at no time was the vessel at risk.

According to reports, initial inspections have been made without results after HL01-Florence, reported ly the largest vessel ever built in Vietnam, took on water only hours after its launch April 6. Divers of Ha Long Shipbuilding Co. in northern Quang Ninh province on Monday checked the bottom of the 53,000-ton vessel, whose stern sunk slightly after water leaked through its outer hull and flooded half of the fourth among five compartments. A company official predicted that some of the ship’s valves had been negligently left unlocked, causing the leak. But another official said the reason might originate from the rails under the bottom of the vessel, which were used to create momentum for the ship launch.

According to reports, Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin) will launch a 53,000 ton-capacity vessel, in northern coastal Quang Ninh province on April 6. The ship, named Florence, is the first of the 21 cargo vessels that the Vinashin's Ha Long Shipyard contracted with a British partner at a total cost of over $400m. Florence is 623 ft., 106 ft. wide and has a 64,000cu.m hold, as designed by Denmark-based Carl Bro Marine company.
