At the end of the 1980s, the Bouchard fleet includes 19 barges, and 11 twin screw tugboats. The barges can now carry anywhere from 18,000 to 125,000 barrels, while the tugboats run at anywhere from 4,200 horsepower to 6,000 horsepower. Also, during this rapid growth period, Bouchard extends its route to include the entire eastern seaboard, the Gulf of Mexico and the Great Lakes. Great Lakes Towing, Shipyard to Hire 100
The Great Lakes Towing Company and Great Lakes Shipyard have announced plans to hire 100 employees before the end of January 2018 to support continued growth driven by client demand. The company said it is seeking candidates to fill a wide range of positions, including shipyard welders, shipfitters and more. “At The Towing Company, we’re looking for great people to join our team,” said Joe Starck, the company’s president.
First Mobile MTU Gas Engines for Rederij Doeksen
The first two preproduction units of the new mobile MTU gas engine from Rolls-Royce have completed performance tests and were accepted by the customer at the beginning of December. MTU delivered the first two of a total of four 16-cylinder Series 4000 gas engines, each with an output of 1,492 kW, for two new catamarans. From 2018, the two aluminum vessels will operate ferry services on the Dutch Wadden Sea.

A New Breed of Tug
When markets expand niches are created, goes the logic. For builders of tugs, that market is “floating gas” and the expanding use of liquefied natural gas, or LNG, as a fuel. In support of LNG, there’ll be more oceangoing tug duty — the new floating storage and regasification units, or FSRUs, mean busier LNG carriers, and LNG cargo owners have an interest in tug escorts that share their “carbon footprint”.

New Grease Extends Life, Lowers Temp of Tugboat Shaft Bearings

Update: Transnet Refloats Vessel Grounded at Port of Durban Entrance
One of three vessels that has grounded in the Port of Durban today due to inclement weather has been successfully refloated and remoored alongside. Port teams remain on scene attending to the remaining vessels. TNPA has also managed to contain containers that had blown into the bay. At this stage vessel movements in the Port of Durban remain suspended until futher notice. No severe disruptions have been reported thus far at the Port of Richards Bay.
