USN Continues to Help in Search for Missing MH370
A U.S. Navy P-8A Poseidon patrol aircraft completed its transition from Kuala Lumpur to Perth March 18 to continue the search for Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 in the southern Indian Ocean. "The search has expanded to the southern portions of the Indian Ocean and the P-8A has the range required to reach those waters," said Lt. Clayton Hunt of Patrol Squadron (VP) 16, the search and rescue detachment mission commander.
Warship Helps Food Aid Reach Kismayo
On Wednesday, December 11, Spanish EU Naval Force (EU NAVFOR) ship ESPS Tornado completed a three-day escort of a World Food Program (WFP) chartered vessel. The WFP ship was escorted by ESPS Tornado from Mombasa to the port of Kismayo in Somalia. During the escort, members of the Spanish Navy crew remained on constant look-out, with the ship’s helicopter ready to launch at short notice to help deter any pirate attack.

Divers from Royal Navy ice patrol ship HMS Protector braved the chilling temperatures to monitor the state of sunken research ship 'MV Bahia Paraiso'. When she ran aground in 1989 the ship spilled 645,000 litres of diesel and caused one of the worst marine environmental emergencies in Antarctica to date. However, a recent Argentine and Dutch team carefully removed all traces of fuel, with HMS Protector’s dive team tasked to ensure there was no further leakage.

LM500 Gas Turbines for Republic of Korea Navy
GE Marine reports that it will supply Samsung Techwin, Republic of Korea (ROK), with LM500 gas turbines to power PK(X) patrol boats to be built as part of phase two of this ROK Navy fast patrol boat program. The first PK(X) Yoon Young-ha has already been launched at Hanjin Heavy Industries’ Busan, ROK shipyard. “We are delighted that the ROK Navy selected LM500 propulsion system commonality for the next PK(X) patrol boats,” said Brien Bolsinger, general manager, GE Marine, Evendale, Ohio.
Latvian Navy Orders Patrol Boats
Abeking & Rasmussen has secured an order for five 25m SWATH@A&R Patrol Boats. The vessels for the Latvian Navy will be designed by A&R and constructed and delivered in co-operation with Riga Shipyard. The new vessels will derive from the well proven SWATH pilot boats, which are in operation since 1999 in the German Bight and recently in the Dutch Waters. They will have the same main dimensions and underwater ship with a complete new propulsion and accommodation concept.
