Port of L.A. SBE Program Reports Strong Participation
The Port of Los Angeles Small Business Enterprise (SBE) Program awarded $97.6 million in contracts to small businesses during the 2012/2013 fiscal year of the $405.9 million that was awarded in construction and professional service contracts by the Port during the period. “Small businesses represent an important and valuable resource in our community,” said Los Angeles City Councilman Joe Buscaino, whose 15th District includes the Port.
Floating Production Systems: A Big Opportunity for Shipyards
Since the beginning of this year, orders have been placed for 17 floating production systems. The combined value of the fabrication contracts exceeds $16 billion. By year end there will likely be another five to eight contracts awarded and the overall contract value for the year will exceed $20 billion. Stated in terms of conventional ships, fabrication of floating production systems in 2013 will equate to orders for 220 VLCCs, 360 Suezmax tankers or 800 Panamax bulk carriers.

POLB Construction Projects Give Work to 5,000
Port of Long Beach (POLB) modernization projects created 5,166 new construction-related jobs in the region in 2012. The number of new jobs is mainly linked to the award of contracts for the design and building of the Gerald Desmond Bridge replacement and an ongoing terminal makeover. Offshore Vessel Charters for Farstad
Farstad Shipping ASA has been awarded charter contracts with a value of about US$ 58-million. Statoil has awarded contracts to PSV Far Spica (2013, PSV 08 CD, 4,000 DWT) and PSV Far Scotsman (2012, PSV 08 CD, 4,000 DWT) to support the Statoil drilling campaign on the coast of East Africa. Commencement is expected to take place in April 2013. The duration of the contracts will be approx. 9 months, with a further 9 month option. Both vessels will leave the North Sea during the month of March.
Strategic Marine Wins Offshore Cargo Catamaran Contract
Western Australian (WA) ship builder Strategic Marine has signed a contract with repeat client Offshore Plant Hire for the construction of a 24 meter heavy duty offshore cargo catamaran. The catamaran will be built at Strategic Marine's Singapore facility which is nearing the end of a major expansion program which will see the shipyard more than double its capacity. The vessel will be completed in the first quarter of 2013 and is expected to operate in WA’s North West.
Acta Marine Gets Shallow-water Supply Work Contracts
Mittelplate is Germany’s largest oilfield and is located in the Wadden Sea tidelands, a unique and sensitive natural environment. Already for many years Acta Marine have been engaged with providing marine support for Mittelplate. The new charter contracts awarded by RWE-Dea involve a total of five Acta Marine vessels and extend over a period of multiple years. Two state-of-the-art supply vessels, customly designed for Mittelplate, will replace the three units currently in service.
Austal Sets Keel of U.S. Navy's JHSV 3
On May 3, 2012, Austal held a keel-laying ceremony for the third Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV), one of nine Austal-designed 103-meter U.S. Navy Joint High Speed Vessels under contract with the U.S. Navy. Austal invited Representative Jo Bonner to authenticate the keel. He was assisted by Jeff Cellon who is an “A” Class welder that has been part of the Austal team since May of 2010. A traditional keel-laying ceremony marks the first significant milestone in the construction of the ship.

Algoma Selects Wärtsilä for Propulsion Installs
Algoma Central Corporation has chosen Wärtsilä to supply complete propulsion systems with integrated scrubbers for six Great Lakes vessels. The full propulsion system with integrated fresh water scrubber lowers operating costs while reducing the vessel's environmental footprint by allowing owners to use high sulphur fuels in Emission Control Area (ECA) Zones and meet sulphur emissions restrictions. This represents the first order for the new integrated Wärtsilä scrubber concept.

$23m Contracts Awarded to Great Lakes Shipyard
Caribbean Tugz, LLC, an affiliate of SEACOR Holdings, Inc., Fort Lauderdale, Florida has awarded Great Lakes Shipyard, Cleveland, Ohio vessel construction contracts to simultaneously build two new state-of-the-art 50-ton bollard pull ASD tugboats to be used for ship docking and escort operations at the Hovensa Oil Refinery in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. The contracts’ total price of the new tugs is $23 million.
Fossekall/Dompap contract to Subsea 7
Statoil has awarded Subsea 7 a contract for marine installations and pipe-laying in connection with development of the Fossekall/Dompap discoveries off the coast of Helgeland in northern Norway. The contract value is around NOK 970 million without options and extra charges due to the weather. Discovered one year ago, Fossekall will also make it possible to develop the earlier find Dompap. This is Statoil’s fifth fast-track development and the largest so far.

North Sea Gudrun Field Ready for Development
The plan for development and operation (PDO) of the North Sea Gudrun field was approved by the Norwegian Parliament on 16 June. Production is scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2014. “This is an important day for us,” said Øystein Michelsen, executive vice president for Exploration & Production Norway (EPN). Gudrun is to be developed with a platform resting on the seabed including a traditional steel jacket weighing 7400 tonnes.
