Panama Canal Expansion: Test Runs Begin
Initial test runs through the expanded Panama Canal began Thursday as tugs led a bulk carrier into the first set of locks on the Atlantic side of the canal, AP reports. Chartered to perform the test operation is the 836-foot-long bulker Baroque, which is not as large as the New Panamax ships (measuring up to 1,200 feet) due to transit the waterway following its formal opening on June 26. The Malta-flagged Baroque wasn't carrying cargo on the first run through the Agua Clara locks.
Damen Delivers Two Tugs to SAAM
SAAM S.A., a towage company with operations across South, Central and North America, has taken delivery of two ASD Tugs 2411 from the Damen Shipyards Group. These compact yet powerful vessels deliver over 70 tonnes of bollard pull and are exceptionally manoeuvrable and reliable. The order was placed just three months ago, following a visit by SAAM representatives to Damen Song Thu Shipyard in Vietnam where the vessels were already in build for stock.

China COSCO to be First through the Expanded Panama Canal
China COSCO Shipping has won the draw for its container vessel Andronikos to make the ceremonial first transit through the Expanded Panama Canal during the waterway’s inauguration on Sunday, June 26. The vessel, which has a maximum capacity of 9,400 TEUs, is 8.25 meters in beam and 299.98 meters in length. The draw took place this morning at the Panama Canal Administration Building, in which a Notary Public served as witness, among invited attendees.
