Crowley Opens Government Services Office
Crowley Maritime Corp. has opened a new government services office in downtown Norfolk, Va. to help the company better serve government agencies such as the Military Sealift Command (MSC) and the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD). The new location will also help Crowley improve its service for the Norfolk Naval Base and several of Crowley managed ships located there, including three ROCON ships, five BOBO class ships and seven T-AGOS/T-AGM ships.

Crowley Maritime Corp. today christened the first of four new Jones Act product tankers at the Tampa Cruise Terminal. The 50,000 dead-weight-tons (dwt), 330,000-barrel-capacity ship Ohio is the first tanker ever to receive the American Bureau of Shipping’s (ABS) LNG-Ready Level 1 approval, meaning Crowley has the option to convert the tanker to liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion in the future.
BMT Performs Production Engineering for ATB Tug
Independent naval architecture and marine engineering design consultancy BMT Nigel Gee (BMT) said it has completed detailed production engineering for the Nancy Peterkin, an articulated tug barge (ATB) tugboat, built by Nichols Brothers Boat Builders (NBBB) and destined for Kirby Offshore Marine. Recently launched by NBBB, the Nancy Peterkin is the first of two ATB tugs with its sister ship, the Tina Pyne scheduled for launch in December 2015.

Bristol Harbor Group Announces Two New Hires

Keel Laid for Crowley’s 2nd LNG ConRo Ship
The keel for the second Commitment Class liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered, combination container – Roll-On/Roll-Off (ConRo) ship for Crowley Maritime Corp.’s liner services group was laid yesterday during a ceremony at shipbuilder VT Halter Marine, Inc.’s facility in Pascagoula, Miss. The keel laying ceremony marked the next step in the construction of Crowley’s two Commitment Class ships, which will exclusively serve the U.S.-Puerto Rico trade lane.
Meeting New Heated Cargo Vessel Regs
With the publication of the 2015 Rules for Building and Classing Steel Barges, ABS has amended the rules to require the submittal of a steady state temperature distribution for Oil Tank Barges that carry heated cargos at temperatures greater than 50°C (122°F) and a structural assessment to determine the resulting thermal stresses in barges where the steel temperature is expected to exceeds 50°C (122°F).
