Managing Ice Jams
April showers may bring May flowers, but spring can also bring ice jams to the thawing rivers and streams across the northern United States. An ice jam or ice dam, is a buildup of broken ice in the river system. It can be a problem that causes the water to back up over the top of highway bridges, roads, or into cities. At times, they can cause flooding. Ice jams can be large–backing up water for miles, or small and only back up water in a small area locally.
USN Awards General Dynamics $11 Million for Support Services
The U.S. Navy has awarded General Dynamics Electric Boat an $11 million contract to perform non-nuclear maintenance work for submarines homeported at the Naval Submarine Base in Groton. Electric Boat is a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD). With this modification, Electric Boat will continue operating the New England Maintenance Manpower Initiative (NEMMI) at the submarine base.

Amongst the latest listing of US Department of Defense, Navy contracts, GD Electric Boat is awarded a contract to provide submarine repairs. General Dynamics, Electric Boat Corp., Groton, Conn., is awarded an $11,000,000 cost-plus-fixed-fee modification to the previously awarded contract (N00024-13-C-4308) to incrementally fund previously exercised options to provide non-nuclear submarine repair work on Groton-based submarines under the New England Maintenance Manpower Initiative (NEMMI).

Tanker Vessel Hits Memorial Bridge
The U.S. Coast Guard reported that it is responding after a 600-foot tanker vessel, Sea Pride, allided with the Memorial Bridge in Portsmouth, N.H., at approximately 5:30 a.m. Friday. The Malta-flagged vessel was outbound from a Piscataqua River facility when it allided with the bridge on its port side, damaging a fender on the bridge. There was no leak on the ship's double hull, no injuries to the crew, and they continued their journey to Portland, Maine, after contacting the Coast Guard.
