USCG Icebreaking Tug Returns from Midlife Overhaul
Coast Guard Cutter Morro Bay returned to homeport in Cleveland Tuesday following a 14-month service life extension project (SLEP) at the Coast Guard Yard in Baltimore, the U.S. Coast Guard announced. SLEP is a major midlife overhaul which is expected to extend the cutter's service life 15 years. Morro Bay is one of nine 140-foot WTGB icebreaking tugs built between the late 1970s and early 1980s in Tacoma, Wash.

In celebrating its 80th anniversary this year, the Steamship Historical Society of America (SSHSA) is offering access to its archives with the opening of its Ship History Center in Warwick, R.I., where the organization’s entire collection is now housed under one roof and is accessible to researchers. “This is an exciting time for us and we are pleased to finally have this wealth of knowledge available for study,” SSHSA Executive Director Matthew Schulte said.

Disabled Fishing Vessel Rescued Off Nantucket
U.S. A disabled fishing vessel was brought in safely to shore early Monday by U.S. Coast Guard crews aboard the cutters Escanaba and Hammerhead. Watchstanders at the Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England Command Center in Woods Hole, Mass. received a phone call from the captain of the vessel Challenger Sunday morning, stating a line had fouled their propeller, and they were disabled and adrift 70 miles southeast of Nantucket, Mass.
USCG’s New Cutter Pulls into Boston
The U.S. Coast Guard’s (USCG) latest 418-foot National Security Cutter James (WSML 754) entered Boston Harbor August 3 ahead of her commissioning scheduled for August 8. James is the fifth of eight planned National Security Cutters – the largest and most technologically advanced class of cutters in the USCG fleet. A $482.8 million contract for James’ construction was awarded to Huntington Ingalls Industries’ Ingalls Shipbuilding division on September 9, 2011.
