Vopak, the world's largest independent storage tank operator, has launched a new service that allows tankers docking at its Singapore Sebarok oil terminal to refuel while simultaneously loading or discharging cargoes. "The new concurrent bunkering service is in line with Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore's directive to improve port efficiency," Vopak said in a statement on Tuesday. The service eliminates the time needed to move tankers calling at the Sebarok terminal to designated anchorages in Singapore's congested waters for refuelling, also known as bunkering. Prior to this, tanker vessels were required to sail to the anchorage to receive their bunkers, the Dutch oil and chemicals storage company said.

Global shipping is still feeling the effects of a cyber attack that hit A.P. Moller-Maersk two days ago, showing the scale of the damage a computer virus can unleash on the technology dependent and inter-connected industry. About 90 percent of world trade is transported by sea, with ships and ports acting as the arteries of the global economy. Ports increasingly rely on communications systems to keep operations running smoothly, and any IT glitches can create major disruptions for complex logistic supply chains. The cyber attack was among the biggest-ever disruptions to hit global shipping.

Each year the NGO Shipbreaking Platform collects data and publishes an annual list of ships dismantled world-wide. Of the 862 vessels dismantled in 2016, 668 were sold for breaking on the beaches of South Asia.  Most vessels scrapped in 2016 were bulk carriers, followed by general cargo and container ships, oil and gas tankers, roll-on roll-offs, passenger vessels and oil platforms.  Bangladesh remained the preferred scrapping destination worldwide in terms of tonnage dismantled. In terms of vessel size, Pakistan received the largest vessels followed by Bangladesh, while Indian yards scrapped more medium-sized ships. China and Turkey meanwhile tend to recycle smaller vessels on an average.

Combined tanker capacity of at least 2.25 mcm LNG lies unused. Over a dozen liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers are parked, many idle, in and around Singapore - one of the world's biggest trading hubs for the fuel - in a sign that the slowdown engulfing world gas markets may be worsening into a crisis. With Asian spot LNG prices down by almost two-thirds since February 2014 as slowing demand combines with rising output, shippers are parking their tankers close to ports like Singapore where unused ships can be easily maintained and serviced until new orders come in. Leading ship brokers estimate over one-tenth of the global fleet of 400 LNG tankers is currently unused because of slowing growth in Asia's biggest economies. The impact just in Singapore suggests the problem could be worse.

An attack by armed separatists in speedboats has forced Royal Dutch Shell to shut down its biggest offshore oil production unit in , removing a tenth of the Opec state's output. The raid on Bonga, a floating oil production and storage facility 120km offshore, has caught Nigeria's foreign oil operators by surprise. The deep water installations in the were previously thought to be beyond the reach of the militant groups that continue to harass and disrupt oil production in the swamps of the Niger Delta. The attack was aimed at Bonga but the militants also attacked two drilling rigs and three supply vessels in the area. The American captain of one supply vessel, under contract for Chevron, was taken hostage.

Kongsberg Maritime Ship Systems (KMSS) has won the contract to supply its integrated monitoring and control system to two Suezmax tankers currently under construction at Split Shipyard, Croatia. The tankers are owned by Tankerska Plovidba d.d., of Zadar in Croatia. The delivery will include the KMSS AutroCargo GL-100 radar based cargo level gauging system. The GL-100 level gauge consists of the GLA100 Level Sensing Unit located on the tank connected to a GLK-100 Signal Processing Unit normally located in the Cargo Control Room. Dedicated signal processing ensures normal system operation on the rest of the system if a malfunction occurs on one of the units. Ballast and Service tank level gauging will be monitored by the KMSS GT302/303 pressure transmitters.

ChevronTexaco Corp. ordered two LNG carriers from Samsung Heavy Industries of South Korea to support the planned growth in the company’s LNG business. The new LNG carriers will have a capacity of 154,800 cubic meters each. Both carriers will be of membrane-type design and equipped with dual fuel diesel-electric propulsion. The two carriers are planned for delivery in 2009. ChevronTexaco Global Gas President John Gass said: "ChevronTexaco has large holdings of natural gas resources in the Pacific and Atlantic Basins. Gass noted, "It is important that our company invest now to meet the growing demand for energy in the future." He added, "ChevronTexaco is making good progress at securing market access for its LNG supply projects.
