Hong Kong's shipping industry is well prepared for a smooth transition to 2000, but local operators cannot guarantee their vessels are Y2K compliant, according to the Hong Kong Shipowners Association. However, chances of millennium accidents have been reduced because most ships will either be moored in port or out at sea when the clock strikes midnight on Dec. 31, officials said. If problems arise, they added, the industry is well prepared. With contingency plans and heightened general awareness of possible mishaps, any problem will be solved quickly.
