April 5, 2004

Dr. Georg Wachtmeister, Technical Director of MAN B&W Diesel AG, takes over professorship for internal combustion engines at the renowned Munich Technical University as of April 1, 2004. This means that Dr. Wachtmeister returns to the place of his studies. Until 1989, prior to his change to the MAN B&W Diesel development division, he was the assistant of Professor Gerhard Woschni.

The new Technical Director of MAN B&W Diesel for medium-speed large-bore diesel engines is Dr. Ralf Marquard, former Division Manager of the AVL Group in Graz, Austria.

Dr. Wachtmeister takes over the vacant chair of his Dissertation Supervisor, Professor Woschni, who passed away last year. Prof. Woschni was regarded as one of the most important scientists in the field of engineering worldwide.

During his 15 years of service within MAN B&W Diesel AG, Dr. Wachtmeister has taken over diverse managerial tasks within the engine and turbocharger design departments. Since the year 2000, he has been Senior Vice President of the Research & Development Division. The 46 year old also intends to use his good contacts within the engine industry in the future: “It goes without saying that I shall keep in touch with MAN.”

“Dr. Georg Wachtmeister has done an excellent job for our engine and turbocharger development. We are happy for him and, at the same time, we are proud that the Technical Director of our company will in future be in charge of one of the most important technical research institutes”, emphasises Dr. Hans-J. Schulte, President of MAN B&W Diesel AG.

Already for some weeks now, Dr. Wachtmeister’s successor has been employed with MAN B&W Diesel AG. Dr. Ralf Marquard is in charge of the technical division for medium-speed large-bore diesel engines. With a degree in mechanical engineering at the RWTH Aachen, the engine expert was stationed at FEV Aachen from 1986 to 1992. Subsequently he was in charge of the Design Department of the engine developer Meta GmbH, Herzogenrath. In 1997 Dr. Marquard joined the AVL Group Graz, as a Division Manager.

Dr. Marquard is looking forward to his new tasks: “I enjoy working very close to the production range with the focus on the engine as the major product.” Together with his team, the 46-year-old expert intends to prepare the MAN B&W engine technology for the future. “The large-bore diesel engine still offers extensive development potentials, especially concerning injection and engine internal measures for emission reduction."
