Operators Warn of Congestion at Indian Ports

Maersk Uses Inland Waterway in India

The world's largest container shipping company Maersk Line began moving 16 containers on the Ganga river from Varanasi to Kolkata, the Shipping Ministry of India said.It will be Maersk's first container movement in the 1390-km inland waterway in the River Ganga from Haldia to Varanasi."Maersk Line will move 16 containers on river Ganga (National Waterway-1) from Varanasi to Kolkata tomorrow. India Issues New Guidelines for Investment in Ports

India's Ministry of Shipping has undertaken a diverse set of initiatives as part of its drive to boost profitability across major Indian ports.One major initiative is to improve the returns earned on treasury investments by the ports for pension, provident and surplus funds. India to Facilitate Marine Skill Developement in Coastal Areas

For skills development of youth in coastal areas, India's Ministry of Shipping signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with theMinistry of Rural Development in New Delhi. India Looks at Port Dependent Industries in Major Ports

India's Ministry of Shipping held a consultation meeting with various stake holders on ‘Policy for Award of Waterfront and Associated Land to Port Dependent Industries in Major Ports’ in New Delhi. The policy was approved by the Union Cabinet earlier this year and is aimed at bringing uniformity and transparency in the procedure for awarding captive facilities at ports. Blacklisted Oil Tanker Returning to Libya

An Indian-flagged oil tanker is returning to Libya, the North African country's rival oil corporation said on Thursday, after its failed first attempt to export crude oil led to the ship being blacklisted by the United Nations Security Council. The Distya Ameya tanker is heading to the western Libyan port of Zawiya, said Nagi al-Maghrabi, chairman of the National Oil Corporation (NOC) set up by Libya's rival eastern government in parallel to the Tripoli-based NOC. India Instructs Disputed Tanker to Await UN Orders

India has instructed an Indian-flagged oil tanker that has been blacklisted by the U.N. not to discharge its cargo of crude oil from Libya's rival eastern government and to await instructions from the United Nations, a senior Indian government official said on Thursday. The tanker, the Distya Ameya, is carrying 650,000 barrels of crude on behalf of a second National Oil Corporation (NOC) set up by Libya's rival eastern government in parallel to the Tripoli-based NOC, which is recognized internationally as the legitimate seller of Libyan oil. India to Do Away with Obsolete Shipping Rules

India's Ministry of Shipping has decided to rescind thirteen rules under the Merchant Shipping Act, 1958 (as amended), having found them to be obsolete and unnecessary. This in turn will declutter the legislative framework governing merchant shipping sector in India and streamline the processes and procedures in the shipping sector. “The Ministry of Shipping has decided to rescind thirteen rules under the Merchant Shipping Act, 1958 (as amended), having found them to be obsolete and unnecessary,” an official statement said. Thirteen separate notifications for rescinding the above rules have been sent for publication in the Gazette of India Extraordinary.

India Plans it Big for Shipping Boom

India's Ministry of Shipping has chalked out a plan to raise a trillion India Rupees to develop ports, build ships and improve inland waterways, says a report in the Business Standard. The money will help the shipping ministry, which floated the proposal, help finance port and maritime-related infrastructure projects. The amount would be raised in the dollar equivalent at an interest of three per cent. For, the government may set up a dedicated company by pooling the future income of the 12 ports it directly owns. The company set up specifically for this purpose—a special purpose vehicle or SPV—will leverage the pooled income of the dollar receivables of the 12 ports to borrow from overseas insurance and pension funds which seek good returns for their capital.
