Government Subpoenas Carnival Environmental Records
Carnival Corp. has received a federal grand jury subpoena asking the cruise line operator to produce documents and records concerning environmental matters, according to a regulatory filing. The Miami-based company received the subpoena on Aug. 22, 2000 from a grand jury sitting in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida. Carnival disclosed the news in a quarterly filing on Friday with the Securities and Exchange Commission. "At present we know very little about why the subpoena came to us and what the U.S. attorney is looking for," Carnival said in a statement. "Once that becomes apparent, we may be able to comment further."
M Ship Co. Files Patent Infringement Suit
M Ship Co. filed a patent infringement lawsuit against ICE Marine Ltd., a UK company, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, to enforce patent rights covering its M-hull boat technology. The lawsuit alleges that ICE Marine has infringed M Ship Co.’s patent for its M-Shaped Boat Hull and has induced others to infringe the patent in the U.S. The M-hull, a non-conventional air entrapment hull design, was invented by M Ship Co.’s founders, Chuck Robinson and Bill Burns. Tiger Woods Comes Out at Yacht Builder
A federal court in Miami has ruled that golfer Tiger Woods’ lawsuit against Christensen Shipyards, Ltd. will proceed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida and that an order enjoining Christensen from the unauthorized use of Woods’ name or photographs of his boat will remain in place. Woods filed his rights-of-publicity suit against Christensen last October in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida. The suit alleges that the luxury yacht manufacturer, based in Vancouver, improperly used Mr. Woods’ name, his wife’s name, and photographs of a yacht built for Woods in connection with the advertising and marketing of Christensen’s products. Mr. Woods also seeks injunctive relief from Christensen.
