Sustainable Shipping Gets New Berth

Centuries-old maritime craftwork and advanced technology help carbon-free seaborne trade.It was a chance meeting that changed two lives. It may also change the way the world thinks about maritime shipping.An accomplished sailor, Danielle Doggett loves tall ships—the large wind-powered sailing vessels that carry passengers and cargo. Her fascination with the big ships started in her teens, sailing on the Canadian side of the Great Lakes and eventually on the St. Lawrence II, a 72-foot two-mast brigantine built in the 1950s for youth sail training.

As the Central Ohio River Business Association (CORBA) pushes commerce on the Ohio River, stakeholders are beginning to take notice. On January 19, in an office tower overlooking the Ohio River, Eric Thomas convened the first meeting of 2017 for a business group working in the 13th largest port in the U.S.: the Ports of Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky (PCNK). Thomas serves as the Executive Director of CORBA – the Central Ohio River Business Association. PCNK’s high rank is likely a surprise to many.

Iridium Partners with Trimble to Support Expansion

Iridium Communications Inc. announced an agreement with Trimble that expands the company's use of satellite communications in its core Transportation and Logistics (T&L) solutions beyond the North American market. UTEC Announces Important Houston Appointment

Leading independent offshore survey company UTEC has announced the appointment of a new Vice President of Measurement Technology at its Houston HQ. Mark Klusza – who holds a Bachelor in Design in Architecture from the University of Florida – brings to the role more than 20 years of experience in the industrial measurement arena. During that time he has owned successful metrology and software companies, and most recently ran the Industrial Measurement and Dimensional Control (IMDC) division for Trimble in the US.

AVEVA, Trimble Partner

Esri GPS Base Station Joins National Network

Esri recently installed a GPS base station to assist its GIS developers and to support surveyors, engineers, scientists, and those in public works and public safety in the community surrounding the Esri campus in Redlands, California. The base station, named GISA, has been accepted by the National Geodetic Survey (NGS) and incorporated into the national Continuously Operating Reference Station (CORS) network. "GPS, originally designed as a US Department of Defense system, has become part of everyday life, with the technology in all types of devices from smartphones to shipping containers," said Brent Jones, Esri surveying and engineering industry manager.

Coral Reef Research – New Program for Educators

Tempe Arizona based high-school teacher Mike Trimble became the first CREW (Coral Reef Educator on the Water) member of the Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation Global Reef Expedition. From March 25th-30th he joined the Foundation's research ship the M/Y Golden Shadow and a team of international scientists as they conducted coral reef research round Navassa Island in the Caribbean. The launch of the CREW project is a milestone in the Foundation's education program and future CREW members will participate in upcoming research missions.

Saab and Trimble to Integrate Solutions for DGPS Transmissions

Trimble and Saab TransponderTech AB are cooperating to integrate their differential GPS (DGPS) solutions for enhanced marine navigation. Saab and Trimble will integrate their marine navigation solutions to deliver DGPS error correction messages to ships at sea through automatic identification system (AIS) coast stations and networks. The DGPS messages transmitted on AIS frequencies will augment the existing marine DGPS broadcasts from coastal beacon stations. The two companies are collaborating to develop interfaces connecting Saab's AIS and Vessel Tracking Management & Information System (VTMIS) with Trimble DGPS reference station and integrity monitoring software.

June 11, 2004 was a very big day for the advancement of maritime training as the Pacific Maritime Institute (PMI) introduced its full mission simulator in a new 15,000 sq. ft. building in Seattle, Wash. Gregg Trunnell, PMI's director set the tone for the day when he said during dedication remarks, "Oceangoing vessels are not simple pieces of equipment and the days of cabin boys and shanghaied crew members are over. Trunnell also noted that maritime schools are few and far between and often students had to travel to a number of states to get a single certification. "With the opening of this new facility, those days are gone forever for mariners in the Pacific northwest," Trunnell noted.

Trimble Awarded USCG Contract

Trimble (Nasdaq: TRMB) announced that it has received a contract from the U.S. Guard (USCG) to provide up to 400 reference station receivers over the next three years for its Maritime Differential GPS (DGPS) Service modernization program. The USCG's Maritime DGPS Service provides navigation information for coastal areas, harbors and waterways in the continental U.S., the Great Lakes, Puerto Rico, portions of Alaska, Hawaii, and a greater part of the Mississippi River Basin free-of-charge. As part of the DGPS system, the Trimble(R) NetRS(R) reference station receivers will provide accurate navigation correction messages that are broadcast to recreational boaters, commercial shipping and fishing fleets, workboats and cruise ships.

Trimble Settles Class Action Lawsuit

Trimble announced the settlement of the securities class action lawsuit filed on December 6, 1995 against the company and certain of its current and former officers and directors. The final court-approved settlement was funded by insurance proceeds and payment by the company of $1.8 million. The entire amount of the company's obligations was previously reserved. The settlement will not adversely affect Trimble's financial results.

Construction of Ship Building Facilities Using Target:Pile

Atkinson Construction used two Target:Pile Systems to aid in the placement more than 3,000 marine piles and 100 caisson structures. Both systems utilize Trimble's RTK receivers to position the barges with centimeter level accuracy. The first stage of the project, at Bath Iron Works Land-Level Transfer Facility Project, Bath, Maine, required the accurate placment of metal templates, which will be used to position five caissons at a time. The template was welded onto the side of the barge, and the center of the first caisson within the template was loaded into the Target:Pile system. Using the position of the first caisson and the required heading of the template, the barge could be moved into location. Once on location the template was spudded onto the seabed and detached from the barge.

NASSCO Starts Third T-AKE Ship

National Steel and Shipbuilding Company began construction on the third ship in the T-AKE program, a new class of combat logistics force ships designated the Lewis and Clark class. Mrs. Jennifer Stanton, wife of U.S. Navy Captain Mike Stanton, Commanding Officer, Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Bath, Maine, made the first cut on the ship’s first steel plate to signify the start of construction.
