US Coast Guard: Latvia Records Highest Detention Ratio in 2022

The US Coast Guard’s Office of Commercial Vessel Compliance has released its U.S. Port State Control Annual Report for 2022, with Latvia noted as having the highest detention ratio, ahead of Bolivia.The report lists highest risk flag administrations based on their 2020-2022 detention ratio as: Latvia (57.14%), Bolivia (31.25%), Togo (7.69%), Curacao (4.88%), Italy (3.39%), Turkey (2.90%) and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (2.30%).Medium risk flag administrations were Cyprus…

Safety Partnership Builds on its Success

International safety expert Salvare has secured a number of orders for its Seapod and Mini-Pod lifesaving systems through its U.K. sales agent SeaSafe over the last year. The latest contract for five units went to a U.K. west coast fleet operator, which wants to kit out all of its vessels to help ensure its crews stay safe at sea. Jeremy Dale, managing director, SeaSafe, said, “Since we took on the distribution of Salvare’s Seapod and Mini-pod, units have been sold worldwide from everywhere in between America to Germany. He added that the systems’ popularity speaks for itself.

Harding to Supply Lifeboats for Johan Sverdrup

Statoil has awarded Harding a contract for delivery of the nine free-fall lifeboats needed for the first phase of the Johan Sverdrup North Sea development. The contract comprises nine FF1200- lifeboats, with nine corresponding LA 1200 SU davits, and constitutes a relatively large order on Harding's scale. The nine lifesaving systems will be delivered during 2017, and will then be installed on the living quarters platform for Johan Sverdrup. Both the lifeboats and the davit system have been developed by Harding in Norway.

Norsafe Lifeboat Reclaims Freefall World Record

At 7:50 p.m. on Tuesday, September 3, Norsafe’s freefall lifeboat performed a drop from a height of 66.8 meters. This is a new world record for freefall lifeboats, and Norsafe has hereby taken back its record, which the company said has been in the company’s possession since 1999, with only two brief exceptions. The new generation freefall lifeboat, GES52, fulfils the latest standards for life-saving appliances on the Norwegian continental shelf, and will be certified for heights of up to 51 meters.

Norsafe opened a new service station in Perth, Australia. This offers their customers better access to service, maintenance, spare parts and training for lifesaving systems in the region. The new establishment will strengthen after sales services and the supply of spare parts for Norsafe products in the Australasia region, with staff and facilities now located closer to existing and prospective clients. The new service office also has a 350m² workshop for refurbishment and repair of lifeboats and is fully supported by the nearest Singapore service station.

Norsafe Freefall Lifeboat Spurs Huge Demand

Norsafe received orders worth NOK 400-million (US$ 45.3-million) over the course of October 2012, & backlog at record height. "It is Norsafe’s newly developed GES50 MKIII freefall lifeboat which accounts for the bulk of these orders," says CEO Geir Skaala, adding that the international demand for this product is fantastic. GES50 MKIII (Gravity Escape System) is certified according to the DNV-OS-E406, the world's strictest requirements for freefall lifesaving systems, applicable on the Norwegian continental shelf from 2015.

USCG – Guidance re Liftboats

The US Coast Guard posted guidance on the inspection, repair, and maintenance of liftboats. As the guidance points out, for many purposes, liftboats are treated by the Coast Guard like conventional hulled offshore supply vessels (OSVs). In certain aspects, though, liftboats are unique. The guidance provides liftboat-specific information relating to automation, steel wastage, tail shaft inspection intervals, drydock inspections, lifesaving systems, fire fighting equipment, systems/equipment for general operation, crane inspection, and manning.
