USCG Detains Cargo Ship As a Result of Deficiencies

On Sept. 27, 2001, following a report from the Puget Sound Pilots that the cargo ship MARLIN had serious navigation and steering problems, the Captain of the Port Puget Sound ordered the vessel to return to the Port of Everett under tug escort and to remain moored until Coast Guard marine inspectors could complete a full inspection. The Coast Guard inspection identified not only navigation and steering problems, but it also identified watertight integrity, lifesaving equipment, and firefighting equipment deficiencies. Subsequently, on September 28, 2001, the MARLIN was ordered to remain moored in Everett until such time that the vessel was brought into full compliance with all the required laws and regulations for its intended service. Marine Safety Office Puget Sound marine inspectors have continued to visit the vessel on a periodic basis to monitor progress towards compliance with all applicable regulations. The MARLIN will not be authorized to depart the Port of Everett until a satisfactory Coast Guard inspection is completed and it is determined that the vessel is fit for its intended service.
