Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has promoted Lee Jae-sung, from CEO to chairman, the position having become vacant when former chairman Min Kye-shik left the shipbuilder in December 2011, reports 'The Korea Times'. Designed Ready to Meet EPA Low-Emissions in 2014. Most Powerful High-Speed Diesel Will Challenge Medium-Speed Engines. Cummins Inc., a manufacturer of diesel engines for the commercial marine industry, will introduce the new QSK95 engine with 4000 hp (2983 kW) output as the most powerful high-speed diesel configured for marine propulsion and auxiliary generator sets. The 95-liter, 16-cylinder engine, revealed today at the Seymour Engine Plant, is designed ready to meet EPA Tier 4 low-emissions regulations taking effect in 2014.

Cummins Inc. (NYSE:CMI) has upgraded the QSK60 marine engine for propulsion and auxiliary applications to meet U.S. EPA Tier 2 and European Union Stage IIIA emissions regulations. With propulsion ratings from 1492 - 1864 kW (2100 - 2500 bhp) and auxiliary ratings from 1563 - 1900 kW (2095 - 2547 bhp), the QSK60 Tier 2 is ideally suited for high-hour demanding applications such as offshore support, towing, cargo and passenger transport, as well as ship’s service power. The continuing advancement of the diesel engine propulsion package for the maritime environment follow a common track, ie. higher power with lower weight; increasingly sophisticated and reliable electronic controls; more efficient handling of emission reductions; and ease of maintenance. While achievement of these objectives vary by manufacturer, as any vessel owner can attest, MTU continues to deliver technological leaps and bounds that are similarly practical. The new MTU 2000 CR (common rail) marine engines are designed to be smaller, lighter, cleaner, more powerful and more economical than their predecessors, the 2000 series. Improvements to the key technologies of turbocharging, injection and electronics have been redeveloped and advanced.

The Volvo Penta D9-500 is a robust 9-litre diesel engine with new engine electronics and an innovative turbo. With its 500 hp, compact design and high torque even at low engine speeds it is perfectly adapted for patrol boats, fast fishing boats and other demanding marine applications where fast acceleration, high speed and good comfort are deciding factors. The D9-500 is an inline-six marine diesel engine with a cylinder volume of 9.4 litres. The engine will be introduced at the SMM marine trade fair in Hamburg when it opens on 28 September 2004. The new engine is type-approved by leading classification societies and replaces Volvo Penta’s 10-litre engine. The engines are intended for use in high speed coastal applications.

With few exceptions, marine power is diesel power and emissions levels from diesel engines are coming under increased scrutiny and regulations from the Environmental Protection Agency. The levels of acceptable NOx, carbon monoxide and particulate matter for diesel engines in U.S. flagged vessels depends on the displacement of the engine. The EPA has settled on a liters-per-cylinder measurement to determine the schedule to meet the emission requirements. For example, marine diesel engines between 1.2 and 2.5 liters per cylinder have had to meet what is known as Tier Two requirements since 2004. These are engines typically used to power small gensets, bow thrusters, fire pumps and other auxiliary engine requirements.

Caterpillar has formed a new Marine Business Unit within the Engine Products Division. The reorganization is designed to strengthen the company's focus on marine customer needs and streamlines communication and response in all aspects of Caterpillar's global marine engine business. Leading the new organization is Jan Arnold, a veteran marketing and sales manager with 21 years experience working not only for Caterpillar, Inc. In addition to steering a team of special business managers focused on specific marine market sub-segments, Arnold will coordinate the efforts of five managers. Bill Heimann, a 27-year Caterpillar engineer with extensive experience in product design, applications and product support, will be marine product group manager.
