Puerto Rico Towing Receives Tug "HANDY THREE"

Jensen Maritime designed Tug Handy-Three

Puerto Rico Towing & Barge Co. is expanding the size of its tugboat fleet with the addition of the newly constructed Handy-Three which arrived in San Juan Thursday morning.   Puerto Rico Towing & Barge Co., a subsidiary of The Great Lakes Group, is located in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and has been providing vessel assistance and towing services to commercial vessels and barges in San Juan Harbor, other Inland Ports, and ports throughout the Caribbean for over 15 years. Recently constructed at Great Lakes Shipyard, Cleveland, Ohio, the Handy-Three is now the fifth tug in the Company’s fleet. The new tug is the third of a class of Handy Size tugboats designed by Jensen Maritime Consultants, Seattle, Washington, built specifically for harbor work and coastal barge towing using the tugs new JonRie Series 500 Towing Winch. By making this $5.7 million investment in a harbor tug, the Company improves the efficiency of the fleet’s round-the-clock towing services and demonstrates the Company’s continued commitment to the local economy by creating sustainable career jobs and putting money back into Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico Towing & Barge Co. will be hosting a christening ceremony for the Handy-Three sometime in the next month.

Crowley Completes Tow of the Ex-USS Iowa

Crowley Marine Services completed its third tow of an historic U.S. Naval battleship April 21, when the company's tug Sea Victory finished the 6,500-mile tow of the USS Iowa from Newport, R.I., to Suisun Bay, Calif. The Sea Victory's tow plan took the Iowa from Narragansett Bay, through the Crooked and Windward Passages to Cristobal, Panama. She then continued Northwest along the coast of Central America toward California


USS Safeguard Completes TOWEX with JDS Amakusa

USS Safeguard (ARS 50) conducted a towing exercise March 15 in the Sea of Japan, working with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) Ship JS Amakusa (AMS 4303). UTV Training Prepares Towing Industry

Quality Management International, Inc. has developed a two-day training program for professionals in the towing vessel industry.  This course for Uninspected Towing Vessels (UTV) focuses on all the current regulations including clauses of the ISM Code relevant for tugs, towboats and barges.  By attending this class, towing professionals can get ahead of the curve and be well-prepared for the impending inspections.

Aerial and onboard inspections confirm the vessel remains firmly aground & stable on Sitkalidak Island, Alaska, with no sign of leakage of pollutants. Naval architects on the survey team confirm the Kulluk is structurally sound and fit for towing to safe harbor in nearby Kiliuda Bay.  The exact timing for potential towing activity is dependent on weather, tides and operational readiness. Dock Starts 170-Day Journey

On July 2 the ex-Portland Dock # 4, now the Grand Bahama Shipyard Dock # 2, departed Portland,Ore., bound for it's new home at the Grand Bahama Shipyard Ltd. in Freeport, Grand Bahama. Operation Big Tow

Coast Guard units along the Gulf Coast, Mississippi River and Western Rivers system have begun operations to ensure towing vessels are properly manned and crews have proper licensing as part of Operation Big Tow, which is taking place from November through January. The primary objective of Operation Big Tow is to ensure towing vessels are being operated by properly licensed individuals through boardings and examinations.


Ultra-large Containership Towing Capabilities Tested

The CMA CGM Group and German Havariekommando to test ultra-large container vessel towing capabilities on CMA CGM Jules Verne   Worldwide shipping group the CMA CGM Group and the German Authority Havariekommando tested Havariekommando´s capability to tow ultra-large container vessels during an exercise held on June 13, 2015.   The vessel used for this exercise was the CMA CGM Jules Verne, the CMA CGM’s 16,000 TEU flagship.  


Eastern Launches Tug for Suderman & Young

In May of 2016 the Argentinian-designed and built 28.77 by 10.2-meter ASD tug Brutus went to work in the harbor at Buenos Aries. This marked a milestone in Argentinian maritime affairs, as it is, at 5,400 HP, the most powerful ship-handling tug in the country.

Fratelli Neri S.p.A., the family-owned, Livorno-based harbor towage company, has ordered three new Damen vessels; an ASD Tug 2913, a Stan Tug 1606 and a Stan Launch 1305, the last for its subsidiary company Labromare, which is 50% owned by Tripmare S.p.A.

Ex-USS Taylor (FFG-50) was towed from Philadelphia Naval Shipyard to Detyens Shipyard in Charleston, S.C. where the vessel will be converted in preparation for delivery to the Taiwanese government as part of the U.S.’ foreign military sales program.  


New Subchapter M Towing Vessel Regulations Take Effect

Multraship’s New ASD Tugs Named in the Netherlands

Two Damen ASD 3212 tugs for towage and salvage specialist Multraship have been named on June 24 at Terneuzen, the Netherlands.   The Multratug 29 and Multratug 30, named respectively by Rita de Ruijter- Ribbens and Els Otten- Muller,  were built at the Damen Song Cam Shipyard in Vietnam

The American Waterways Operators (AWO) and ClassNK have signed an agreement under which ClassNK will be authorized to conduct audits of AWO's Responsible Carrier Program, a safety management system for towing vessels with which all AWO members must comply as a condition of association membership

Diesel Spill Forces Closure on the Mississippi

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers closed Lock and Dam 25 due to diesel in the water on the upper Mississippi River near St. Louis, Missouri, Wednesday.   An estimated 2,074 gallons of diesel was reportedly released by the towing vessel Jerry Jarrett while transiting the lock and dam
