Puerto Rico Towing Receives Tug "HANDY THREE"

Jensen Maritime designed Tug Handy-Three

Puerto Rico Towing & Barge Co. is expanding the size of its tugboat fleet with the addition of the newly constructed Handy-Three which arrived in San Juan Thursday morning.   Puerto Rico Towing & Barge Co., a subsidiary of The Great Lakes Group, is located in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and has been providing vessel assistance and towing services to commercial vessels and barges in San Juan Harbor, other Inland Ports, and ports throughout the Caribbean for over 15 years. Recently constructed at Great Lakes Shipyard, Cleveland, Ohio, the Handy-Three is now the fifth tug in the Company’s fleet. The new tug is the third of a class of Handy Size tugboats designed by Jensen Maritime Consultants, Seattle, Washington, built specifically for harbor work and coastal barge towing using the tugs new JonRie Series 500 Towing Winch. By making this $5.7 million investment in a harbor tug, the Company improves the efficiency of the fleet’s round-the-clock towing services and demonstrates the Company’s continued commitment to the local economy by creating sustainable career jobs and putting money back into Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico Towing & Barge Co. will be hosting a christening ceremony for the Handy-Three sometime in the next month.

Aerial and onboard inspections confirm the vessel remains firmly aground & stable on Sitkalidak Island, Alaska, with no sign of leakage of pollutants. Naval architects on the survey team confirm the Kulluk is structurally sound and fit for towing to safe harbor in nearby Kiliuda Bay.  The exact timing for potential towing activity is dependent on weather, tides and operational readiness. Once the Unified Command team managing the incident confirms it is safe and ready to move forward


Smith Berger Tow Pins Lead the Way

Smith Berger Marine, Inc. said it has been selected by Edison Chouest Offshore to design and manufacture the Tow Pin Stern Roller units required on its nine new vessels, including five escort tugs and four docking tugs.   Edison Chouest is building the new tugs in order to execute a 10-year Ship Escort-Response Vessel System (SERVS) contract with the Alyeska Pipeline Service Company, for which the tugs will provide tanker escort and spill response services in Prince William Sound.


USS Safeguard Completes TOWEX with JDS Amakusa

USS Safeguard (ARS 50) conducted a towing exercise March 15 in the Sea of Japan, working with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) Ship JS Amakusa (AMS 4303). Crowley Completes Tow of the Ex-USS Iowa

Crowley Marine Services completed its third tow of an historic U.S. Naval battleship April 21, when the company's tug Sea Victory finished the 6,500-mile tow of the USS Iowa from Newport, R.I., to Suisun Bay, Calif. The Sea Victory's tow plan took the Iowa from Narragansett Bay, through the Crooked and Windward Passages to Cristobal, Panama. UTV Training Prepares Towing Industry

Quality Management International, Inc. has developed a two-day training program for professionals in the towing vessel industry.  This course for Uninspected Towing Vessels (UTV) focuses on all the current regulations including clauses of the ISM Code relevant for tugs, towboats and barges.  By attending this class, towing professionals can get ahead of the curve and be well-prepared for the impending inspections.


Ultra-large Containership Towing Capabilities Tested

The CMA CGM Group and German Havariekommando to test ultra-large container vessel towing capabilities on CMA CGM Jules Verne   Worldwide shipping group the CMA CGM Group and the German Authority Havariekommando tested Havariekommando´s capability to tow ultra-large container vessels during an exercise held on June 13, 2015.   The vessel used for this exercise was the CMA CGM Jules Verne, the CMA CGM’s 16,000 TEU flagship.

Tugs 'Triton' and 'Honcho' of the Puerto Rico Towing & Barge Co. recently assisted a drifting vessel off the coast of Puerto Rico. The cargo ship Global Destiny, owned and operated by Diavlos Maritime based in Athen, Greece, called for assistance the morning of Saturday, March 16. The vessel reported that it had run out of fuel and was drifting approximately five miles off the coast of Dorado, approximately nine miles north west of San Juan. Puerto Rico.

Two Maersk OSVs Sink off of France
