Tuesday, May 23, 2006
According to reports, Pacific Reliance, a tug owned by Crowley Towing, was pushing a barge on the Hudson River when it experienced an engine compartment fire. The ATB had a load of 51,000 barrels – over 2.1m gallons – of ethanol. It has the capacity to carry 108,000 barrels. It is said the vessel was on its way from Albany to Baltimore. New Hamburg was assisted by City of Newburgh and City of Kingston firefighters; they were also assisted by boats from White’s Marina and a small tug from New York Trap Rock, the New York State Department of environmental Conservation, Dutchess County Sheriff and US Coast Guard. The ATB, the first in a series of six, was built by VT Halter Marine and christened less than two months ago. Source: Mid-Hudson News
