Inmarsat Inks Satcom Deal with Clearwater Seafood

Mobile satellite communications company Inmarsat said it as secured an an agreement with Clearwater Seafood that commits Canada’s largest vessel-operating seafood company to Fleet Xpress high-speed maritime broadband services.Clearwater Seafood chose to install the Fleet Xpress combination of high speed Ka-band and continuous FleetBroadband backup on board seven vessels replacing Ku-band services on each vessel. Tech File: Automating Ballast Ops When Installing BWMS

Installing ballast water treatment systems to comply with new regulations will require owners to automate ballast operations on board their vessels or barges. Retrofitting ballast water treatment systems generally requires modifications to the existing ballast systems. Many older vessels have remote operated valves, but no automation of the ballast system. EMI has been working with parent company W&O to provide blue water barges with innovative solutions to add automation functionality to their fleet.

Fuel Consumption, Emissions Monitoring Software Updated

As part of the ongoing Blue Star Delos Renewable Energy Innovation Project, Eco Marine Power (EMP) stated that the Aquarius Management & Automation System (MAS) installed on Blue Star Delos has been updated with new fuel oil consumption (FOC) and emissions monitoring software. This updated software combined with the Aquarius MAS hardware allows for fuel consumption data from all flow meters on the ship to be displayed and logged in real-time. In addition CO2, NOx and SOx emissions are calculated based on the fuel type being used. Data is logged every minute and via a connection to a dedicated GPS unit, the ships location and speed is displayed and logged. A trip-meter is also available so that fuel consumption can be monitored for a specific time period or voyage.

Danelec Marine Making Free ECDIS Upgrades

Danelec Marine has launched a program to provide free upgrades of shipboard Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS) to the latest technology meeting new ECDIS standards. The Danish marine electronics company is currently replacing the first-generation Danelec DM800 ECDIS products with new DM800 ECDIS G2 hardware and V2 software. The Danelec DM800 ECDIS G2 platform has been designed to enable the ship’s crew to upgrade to the V3 software, which will be fully compliant with the new IEC61174 Ed. 4, IHO 52 and IHO 64 standards. Danelec Marine also offers a free-of-charge update training for navigators already holding a type-specific certificate on previous versions of DM800 ECDIS.

The offshore specialist thereby concludes a financial year where its activities have been characterised by growth, with high expectations for 2013. While many businesses are still experiencing weak demand, EIVA a/s can look back on a very satisfactory year in the offshore industry. EIVA has provided hardware and software for businesses specialised in energy, engineering and surveys at sea since 1978, which the annual report published today demonstrates through strong results that are the best the company has seen the last 35 years. While the revenue declined by nearly DKK 6 m due to reduced sales of third-party equipment, the number of own products sold advanced.

Nobeltec Releases New Service Pack

Nobeltec announces new hardware integration and software functionality with the service pack release of Admiral 11.1 and VNS 11.1. VNS and Admiral are designed for safe and accurate navigation on recreational boats, commercial vessels, and mega yachts. This newest service pack adds value to Nobeltec navigation systems. One of the most significant updates to the marine navigational software is the ability to integrate with the Furuno Digital Fish Finder (DFF1) Sounder. Vessel operators seek protection by hedging fuel needs. It’s easier than you might think. Some workboat operators defend themselves against higher diesel prices by buying futures contracts, while others purchase fuel at prices fixed in advance from their suppliers. Others, perhaps less-savvy and/or smaller companies, however, take their chances by buying in the spot market. While some operators are uncertain about their future fuel requirements and consumption, domestic ferry operators for the most part know exactly what they’ll need in the year ahead.

Royal Caribbean Q3 Results

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (NYSE:RCL) announced earnings for the third quarter of 2009 and provided guidance for the fourth quarter and full year. •    Third quarter 2009 net income was $230.4 million, or $1.07 per share, compared to net income of $411.9 million, or $1.92 per share in 2008. •    The results were better than the company's most recent guidance of $0.95 to $1.00 per share, driven primarily by the strength of close-in bookings. •    Net Yields for the third quarter decreased 16.5% versus 2008, somewhat better than the company's previous guidance of down approximately 18%. •    Net Cruise Costs per APCD ("NCC") for the third quarter decreased 10.0% versus 2008. NCC, excluding bunker for the third quarter declined 3.8% versus 2008.

Thales Sonar Upgrades for Submarines

Thales UK announced that it has been awarded a contract by BAE Systems to upgrade three Trafalgar-class and three Astute-class submarines with the Sonar 2076 Stage 5 system. These submarines are currently fitted with the 2076 Stage 4 system. Once all the work is completed, 2076 Stage 5 will be fully deployed across the Royal Navy’s (RN’s) nuclear-powered attack (SSN) submarine fleet. The Stage 5 Inboard Replacement (Stage 5 IR) contract is the latest in a series of developments to improve the capability, efficiency and through-life cost of the Sonar 2076.
