The company’s motto relates both to the importance and the consistent, innovative force of the shipping industry: "No other form of transport has transformed globalization and global trade as much as commercial shipping," said Dr. Stephan Timmermann, Executive Board Member at MAN Diesel & Turbo. "This was as true in the days of Christopher Columbus as it is now, and in the future too, shipping will remain a major pacesetter for the world's economic development. That said, commercial shipping is facing considerable challenges. To live up to its responsibilities, it needs to improve its ecological footprint.

The German Engineering Federation (VDMA) reported a good order situation for German marine and offshore oil and gas equipment suppliers, but the upsurge in incoming orders is not making the sector euphoric. “The boom in world ship newbuilding orders in 2013 gave us strong order growth, particularly from China and Korea. Here our ongoing export commitment in the global market is paying off: Germany remains the leading country for marine equipment suppliers worldwide. At the same time, we registered above average growth in incoming orders in the offshore oil and gas area,” stated Dr. Alexander Nürnberg, Chairman of VDMA Marine and Offshore Equipment Industries, at the association’s press conference held in Hamburg on Wednesday.

MAN Diesel & Turbo has supplied a complete propulsion system comprising a 7L32/44CR engine, Renk gears and an Alpha adjustable CP propeller for an ultra-modern chemicals tanker operated by GEFO Gesellschaft für Öltransporte mbH. For MAN Diesel & Turbo, the order represents a breakthrough for the 32/44CR series in the small twin-hulled tanker sector of the market. The tanker, christened Fidelio, has a DWT of 6366 and can transport 260 types of (petro-) chemical materials – from vegetable oil to sulfuric acid. The Fidelio’s main routes will be in northern Europe, however the tanker is also equipped for worldwide operation and therefore complies with the strict emissions regulations enforced in US coastal waters.

STX Offshore & Shipbuilding, the South Korean shipbuilder, recently delivered the Castillo de Santisteban to Empresa Naviera Elcano, the globally active Spanish shipping group. Five MAN dual-fuel 8L51/60DF engines will power the 984-ft long LNG carrier with each delivering 8,000 kW at 514 rpm. The newbuilding has been assigned by her charterer, Spanish energy company Repsol – Gas Natural LNG (Stream), to the Peruvian Camisea/Pampa Melchorita gas project, the first natural-gas liquefaction plant in South America. The carrier has a carrying capacity of 173,600 m3 LNG.

A CIMAC Panel discussion was conducted at the ASME Turbo Expo Land, Sea & Air 2000 in Munich on May 10. Titled, "Diesel Engines vs. Gas Turbine Engines up to 300 MW," the topic was discussed by a panel of four chaired by Mark McNeely, Diesel & Gas Turbine Publications.
