Long Beach's Cement Terminal Project Approved

The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners approved the Mitsubishi Cement Facility Modification Project this week, greenlighting the addition of 40,000 metric tons of additional storage capacity consisting of storage and loading silos on vacant Port property adjacent to Mitsubishi’s existing facility at the Port’s Pier F. The site will increase in size from 4.21 acres to 5.92 acres. The board’s approval was contingent on environmental measures and upgrades. The terminal receives imported cement and cement-like materials via bulk cargo ships. The product is stored in a warehouse or in silos. It is then loaded onto trucks and taken to local and regional concrete batch plants.

Big Ships Can Lose Big Money on Pumps

A  project by pump maufacturer Grundfos aboard a Lauritzen Bulkers cargo ship shows that large vessels could be losing money on wasted energy. The project, carried out on the 19,889-ton Durban Bulker, focused on efficiency in ship’s pumps. The Durban Bulker project focused on the energy used in cooling off the ship’s engines. New Pumps Save Millions at Sea

A Grundfos project aboard a Lauritzen Bulkers cargo ship shows that large vessels could be losing money on wasted energy. A pilot project between Grundfos and Danish shipping operator Lauritzen Bulkers shows that better technology and a sharp focus on pump efficiency can mean big savings on the bottom line. The project, carried out on the 19,889-ton Durban Bulker, focused on efficiency in ship’s pumps. “Ships often use oversized pumps that consume too much power,” says Kim Kirkegaard, Business Development Manager at Grundfos. The project paid off.

USCG Works to Save Energy, Emissions

Alaris Companies last month announced it is working with the U.S. Coast Guard to help it decrease energy use and emissions via its fleet energy management program. Maritime Reporter recently visited with Alaris CEO, Bobbi Wolff, and Executive VP of Engineering, Michael Gaffney, to discuss the company, its system and the global trend to minimize maritime’s carbon footprint. Foss Maritime Wins Clean Air Award

The ports of and was honored Foss Maritime Company, calling its innovative approach to reducing air pollution in southern an outstanding example of corporate leadership. Among Foss’ initiatives: Developing the world’s first hybrid tug, the Green Dolphin, a low-emission vessel that company officials expect to deploy in San Pedro Bay by the fall of 2008. Earlier this year, the federal Environmental Protection Agency gave Foss and the Green Dolphin its Clean Air Technology Award, the first time a marine operating company has ever received the honor. Susan Hayman, vice president for environmental and corporate development, accepted the award for corporate level leadership at the First Annual San Pedro Bay Ports Clean Air Action Plan – Clean Air Excellence Awards.

Foss Receives Honor for Environmental Stewardship

U.S. Coast Guard has awarded the Foss Maritime Company its most prestigious environmental honor: the 2008 William M. Benkert ‘gold’ award for marine environmental protection. It is Foss’ second major ‘green’ award in less than a month. In early June, Foss won the Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Air Excellence Award for development of its low emission ‘Green Dolphin’ hybrid tug, the first time a maritime operating company has ever received the EPA’s honor. Foss also received a Commendation – Environmental Award from BP Shipping, and honorable mention for the ’s 2008 Marine Environmental Business of the Year award. Foss Maritime President Gary Faber and other top company officials were in , CA., to receive the Benkert award from Coast Guard Commandant Thad Allen.
