Korean Register of Shipping Consolidates in India

The Korean Register of Shipping (KR) – international classification society and IACS member – formally opened its first branch office in India yesterday.

As part of its expanding international network of branch offices, KR’s 45thoffice was formally opened in Mumbai by its Chairman and CEO, Oh Kong-gyun, in the presence of senior guests from the Indian government and maritime community as well as from Korea.

Immediately preceding the opening ceremony, KR held a technical seminar for regional shipping representatives.  KR’s technical division introduced topical issues relating to IMO Goal Based Standards and also discussed a range of technical aspects surrounding the fast growing offshore industry  - this was particularly well received by the Indian audience.  The seminar concluded with a round-up of recently introduced maritime rules and regulations.

The Mumbai office will be managed by Song Sung-ok who has plans to employ a staff of local experts to assist him to meet the demands of clients in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

The Korean Register of Shipping currently services a classed fleet of around 35 million gt and this new office will assist it achieve its short-term aim of a classed fleet in excess of 40 million gt when the society celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2010.
