Maersk Names New Containership

August 15, 2006

On August 12, Odense Steel Shipyard presented its latest newbuilding, an 11,000 TEU container vessel, for the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group. Ane Mærsk Mc-Kinney Uggla, accompanied by her husband, Mr Peder Uggla, honoured A.P. Moller - Maersk and the Yard by naming the newbuilding Emma Maersk. The namegiving ceremony was attended by the company’s and the yard’s Boards of Directors as well as Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller. The newbuilding is named after Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller’s late wife, Emma, who passed away in December last year. Just as Emma Mc-Kinney Møller was a person others held in high regard, the vessel Emma Maersk will set its mark. As the world's largest container vessel it will set new standards for safety and environment. Environmentally friendly silicone paint covers the hull of the vessel below the waterline – reducing water resistance and cutting the vessel’s fuel consumption by 1,200 tons per year. With 14-cylinder Wärtsilä RT-flex diesel engine which develops 110,000 bhp, Emma Maersk will after delivery enter Maersk Line’s worldwide service and thereby together with the other vessels contribute to a global, competitive and flexible transport for the Company’s customers. Emma Maersk will be registered in Taarbæk and will be commanded by Captain Henrik Solmer with Michael Thomassen Sort as Chief Engineer.
