ABB has secured a contract with the Chinese shipyard COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Yangzhou) Co. Ltd., to equip 10 China COSCO Shipping Corporation Limited container vessels with its permanent magnet shaft generator systems. Tajikistan is interested in supplying cargoes to international markets through the Caspian Sea, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Tajikistan to Azerbaijan to Azerbaijan Soli Rustam said during his visit to the Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company (ACS). Hong Kong's Hutchison Ports has acquired a 50% shareholding in Amsterdam-headquartered terminal and logistics operator TMA Logistics. TMA has a variety of general cargo terminal operations together with warehousing, shipping, logistics and project cargo activities at three sites in Amsterdam and one in Antwerp as well as at Hutchison Ports Amsterdam (former known as Amsterdam Container Terminal). Commenting on the acquisition, Clemence Cheng, Executive Director, Hutchison Ports, said: “The acquisition of a 50% stake in TMA Logistics complements both our existing operations in Amsterdam and the activities of Hutchison Logistics. We have developed a good working relationship with TMA over the last three years which has brought a range of operations to ACT.

The October 1, 2015 loss of the U.S. cargo vessel El Faro along with its 33 member crew led to the convening of a Coast Guard Marine Board of Investigation charged with determining as closely as possible the cause(s) of the casualty; whether there is evidence that any failure of material was involved; whether there is evidence of misconduct, inattention to duty, negligence, or willful violation of law; and whether there is evidence that government personnel contributed to the casualty. Automated rigid sail set to bring back wind-assisted propulsion for shipping. Onomichi, Japan – 8th April 2016 – In another important step towards bringing its rigid sail technology onto ships Eco Marine Power (EMP) has commenced work on the production of an EnergySail in Onomichi, Japan. This first ever factory produced EnergySail is being manufactured by EMP's strategic partner - Teramoto Iron Works. The EnergySail (patent pending) is an automated rigid sail device that enables ships to utilize the power of the wind to reduce fuel consumption and lower vessel emissions. It can also be fitted with flexible marine-grade solar panels or other devices and used to charge batteries or the electrical power can be fed into EMP's Aquarius MAS + Solar solution.

RINA Services and the Asian Classification Society (ACS) recently classified the first two general cargo ships at 15,000 GT owned by IRISL, a major shipping company in Iran. This dual classification is the result of a partnership signed with the Tehran-based ACS shortly after sanctions in Iran were lifted. RINA Services’ marine classification in this area reflects Italy’s strong commitment to forging long-standing relationships with countries in the Middle East and now in Iran in particular. “All classification societies are trying to enter the Iranian market. Our recent partnership with the ACS was a strategic move that has proved successful in expanding our local reach and classification expertise in the area,” said Andrea Di Bella, Area Manager, RINA Services in the Middle East.

CIMIC Group today announced the appointment of Adolfo Valderas as Deputy Chief Executive Officer. Mr Valderas is the current CIMIC Group Chief Operating Officer. CIMIC Executive Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Mr Marcelino Fernández Verdes said: “Adolfo has achieved a great deal for the CIMIC Group during the past two years, as he has worked on the ongoing transformation of our operations. “Adolfo, who has held leadership roles with ACS companies (construction and PPPs) internationally, brings his considerable management capabilities to the position. Mr Valderas takes on the role in addition to his current position as Chief Operating Officer, a role he has held since December 2013.

The U.S. How did an urgent requirement to build a road to Alaska end up helping to design submarines and to recover oil spills in the Arctic ice? The Army Corps of Engineers was faced with a monumental challenge of building a highway to connect the “lower 48” to Alaska during World War II to keep America’s northernmost territory secure from invasion. The road crossed hundreds of miles of wilderness, and much of the roadbed sat up permafrost, presenting challenges to America’s roadbuilders.

U.S. Ten years on, there’s little certain about ballast water management regulations that the industry can chart a course around other than that it will be expensive – possibly the most costly marine retrofit to date. With install estimates running from $500,000 to as much as $5 million per vessel, across some 68,000 commercial ships estimated by the IMO to transfer 7 billion tons of  ballast water annually – industry players say we could be looking at as much as an $80 billion market. Eventually, that is, because there is not a lot of activity right now.
