Conflict in the Red Sea has brought massive carbon emissions increases in ocean freight container shipping, according to data just released by Xeneta.The Xeneta and Marine Benchmark Carbon Emissions Index (CEI), which measures carbon emissions per ton of cargo transported across the world’s top 13 trades, hit 107.4 points in Q1 2024 - the highest it has been since the index began in Q1 2018.For containers being shipped via ocean from the Far East to Mediterranean, the CEI reveals carbon emissions increased by 63% in Q1 2024 compared to Q4 2023.

Danish shipping company Maersk said on Monday that its services in Israel were operational and stable, and that it was watching developments in the country closely given the ongoing war with Palestinian militant group Hamas."Bookings for ocean, rail, road and air services to and from Israel... continue to be accepted and facilitated," Maersk said in a statement.(Reuters - Reporting by Louise Breusch Rasmussen, editing by Terje Solsvik)

Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union members at the ferry operator CalMac go on strike over the future of services of Scotland’s west coast as two thirds of CalMac routes have been suspended. CalMac will operate a third of its Clyde and Hebrides ferry services, with nine of 27 routes sailing as normal or to an amended timetable. The RMT union is concerned about the outcome of a tendering bid which could see the service change hands from publicly-owned CalMac to private firm Serco. Demand for oil is intimately connected to the demand for transportation in the United States and the other advanced industrial economies. Cars, trucks, airlines, railways and shipping accounted for 71 percent of total U.S. oil consumption in 2013, according to the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics. Petroleum-derived fuels, including gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and fuel oil, met 97 percent of the transportation sector's energy needs. Before the oil shocks of the 1970s as much as half of U.S. oil demand came from power producers and for heating homes, offices and factories. But following the sharp rise in prices, oil's role in other parts of the economy was largely replaced by cheaper coal, gas, nuclear and eventually renewables, leaving oil as a transport fuel.

The Grade T “Type A” gasket, designed for use with specific Victaulic couplings and flange adapters, simplifies gasket specification and offers superior fire-resistant performance. The nitrile Grade T Type A gasket can be specified for a wide range of services, eliminating the need to use multiple types of gaskets for different applications and simplifying gasket selection. The gaskets may be used in Class I, II and III piping systems outside boiler rooms in accordance with Table 7 IACS UR P2.

U.S. Navy and Coast Guard training teams began their portion of the pilot Global Fleet Station (GFS) on May 1, aboard High Speed Vessel Swift (HSV 2), while in port here. Global Fleet Station is designed to validate the GFS concept for the Navy and support U.S. Southern Command objectives for its area of responsibility by enhancing cooperative partnerships with regional maritime services and improving operational readiness for the participating partner nations. Training teams from Navy Expeditionary Combat Command and Expeditionary Training Command in Little Creek, Va., along with U.S. Coast Guard training teams from International Training Division, based in Yorktown, Va., are facilitating three training sessions requested by the nation of Panama.
