DEME Bags Its Largest Ever Dredging Deal

The Belgian dredging and offshore installation firm DEME said Friday it had secured its largest ever dredging and land reclamation contract.The contract is for work for the Abu Qir port project in Egypt. The project will see the deployment of DEME’s giant new cutter suction dredger ‘Spartacus’.While it said the contract was a "large" one, and its largest ever in the dredging and reclamation space, DEME did not provide the exact figure. DEME JV Wins Kiel Canal Contract

Belgian dredging group DEME has been awarded a contract as part of a joint venture for the widening of the Kiel Canal in Germany.Two DEME subsidiaries are to carry out marine dredging works for the €99m (£84m) widening of a 4km stretch of the Kiel Canal. Works started in January 2020 and will run until the end of 2023.The Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration, represented by the WSA Kiel-Holtenau, commissioned the joint venture with the construction work to expand 4 km of the eastern section of the Kiel Canal.The contract carries a total value of approximately EUR 99 million in which the DEME Group’s subsidiaries Nordsee Nassbagger…

"Bonny River" TSH Dredger Delivered

The trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) Bonny River built at Royal IHC’s Chinese partner yard COSCO Guangdong Shipyard was recently delivered to the Belgian dredging company DEME. The TSHD features a number of advance technologies, and is driven by controllable pitch propellers and transverse thrusters from Schottel. Bonny River Joins DEME Fleet

The Belgian dredging, environmental and marine engineering group DEME is investing in a new generation of trailing suction hopper dredgers which will be trendsetting in coastal protection and dredging hard soils.DEME ordered newest generation trailing suction hopper dredger  'Bonny River' at Royal IHC."Thanks to the combination of unique characteristics such as an extremely long suction pipe, a large transport capacity with limited depth and an additional heavy duty rock draghead, the multidisciplinary ship can be used effectively in shallow water and in hard soils.," DEME said in a press release.With the 'Bonny River', DEME is responding to the macroeconomic trend of maritime sand extraction at greater depths and further offshore.

Singapore Mega Port on Track for 2021

Singapore on Tuesday said its plans to build the world's biggest container terminal in a single location were on track, as it held a ceremony to mark a milestone in the initial construction phase of the mega-project.Tuas Terminal is set to open progressively from 2021, six years after work began, and it is expected to be capable of handling 65 million twenty-foot long shipping containers per annum when fully completed in 2040.Once completed, the terminal is slated to become the world's largest container terminal in a single location, said Quah Ley Hoon, chief executive of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore."This will strengthen our Global Hub Port status…

DEME Wins Elbe Deepening Contract

DEME, an international group of specialized companies involved in complex marine engineering works, has won a major contract to carry out the deepening of the Elbe fairway in Germany.The Belgian dredging, environmental and marine engineering group said that its German subsidiary Nordsee Nassbagger- und Tiefbau GmbH, based in Bremen, has acquired the maintenance dredging contract on the River Elbe in Germany.The contract has been awarded to a joint venture, including DEME’s German subsidiary, for a period of two years. DEME DP2 Jack-up Vessel Named ‘Apollo’

The Belgian dredging and hydraulic engineering group DEME NV said that its newest, self-propelled DP2 jack-up vessel ‘Apollo’ was officially named in the port of Zeebrugge, Belgium on February 21.The ceremony was performed by Olympic, World and European Champion heptathlon Nafi Thiam, according to a press release.One of the exceptional features of the ‘Apollo’ are its extremely long lattice legs of 106.8 m, which allow the vessel to jack-up in water depths up to 65 m. DEME Appoints Luc Vandenbulcke as CEO

Belgian dredging, environmental and marine engineering group Dredging, Environmental and Marine Engineering NV (DEME)'s Board of Directors announced that with effect from January 1, 2019 Luc Vandenbulcke will succeed Alain Bernard as the company’s CEO.Bernard started working for the group in 1980 and has been CEO of DEME since 2006. DEME relies on Septentrio GNSS technology

The Belgian dredging, environmental and engineering group DEME relies on the accuracy and reliability of the AsteRx family of precise GNSS positioning solutions from Septentrio. DEME is using Septentrio’s AsteRx GNSS receivers to obtain centimetre-level accuracy for all their dredging and marine construction operations worldwide. These receivers are specifically designed to operate in difficult conditions: from ice-covered Arctic ports to the tropical climates of Southeast Asia; whether dredging a few metres from the coast line to constructing wind turbines kilometres out at sea. DEME began using Septentrio’s solutions over 10 years ago.

COSCO Shipping, DEME Signs Umbrella Agreement

The Belgian dredging, environmental and marine engineering group DEME and COSCO Shipping - the largest shipping company in the world - will work closely on the development of offshore wind energy in China. The umbrella agreement was signed today in the presence of Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel and the Chinese Premier Li Keqiang. The attendance of both Heads of Government signifies the importance of the cooperation agreement and the Chinese vision concerning the transition to renewable energy. China COSCO Moving to Offshore Winds

China COSCO Shipping, which uses bulk carriers and container vessels to transport goods, has seen its cargo business decline amid China's slowdown and has decided to get into the offshore wind power generation business, reports  Nikkei. New Offshore Wind Project Launched in China

The Belgian dredging, environmental and marine engineering group DEME and China COSCO Shipping – the largest shipping company in the world – have formed a joint venture to develop offshore wind energy in China. Damen Completes Maintenance of Flintstone

The fallpipe vessel Flintstone has departed from Damen Shiprepair Amsterdam, part of Damen Shiprepair & Conversion, following a six-week programme of maintenance and repairs together with her first Special Survey. Dual-fuel Engines for DEME’s New Dredger

Anglo Belgian Corporation, a manufacturer of medium speed diesel engines, announced the sale of two 16VDZD dual fuel engines that will power a new build vessel for the Belgian dredging, environmental and marine engineering group DEME. This agreement was officialized with the Dutch shipyard Royal IHC. The commissioning of the dredger Minerva is scheduled for late 2016, making it the first dredging vessel that will be equipped with dual fuel engines, in addition to DEME's other trailing suction hopper dredger Scheldt River that will be built and put into service around the same time.

Dredging India

For enhancing the draft in ports or undertaking major dredging projects, India still relies on foreign dredging giants, a situation not likely to change unless the government comes out with a policy encouraging investment in the dredging industry. European dredging giants continue to make a clean sweep of all major Indian dredging projects, a market condition largely attributed to the lack of an environment conducive to encouraging Indian companies into large scale dredging. The dredge will be used for dredging projects throughout India due to the growing demand from the Indian market for dredging operations. The mono hull cutter suction dredge design and characteristics has been defined in close co-operation with the client and can be operated in shallow waters. It will be equipped with a Vosta LMG underwater dredge pump and inboard pump both type VL750, a hydraulically driven Vosta T2 cutter head and a Vosta LMG wire system spud carrier.
