US Invests Nearly $10 Million to Advance Marine Energy

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced nearly $10 million for seven projects that will accelerate development and testing of marine energy technologies. These investments advance research on wave-powered technology for use in seawater desalination and support a feasibility study for a potential ocean current test facility. “Marine energy technologies have incredible potential to provide clean electricity as well as clean water,” said Alejandro Moreno, Acting Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.

Tug and Barge Transporting Munitions Run Aground on Florida Beach

A tug and barge ran aground Thursday night near Deerfield Beach, Fla., while transporting munitions from Port Canaveral to a U.S. Naval facility in the Bahamas.The U.S.-flagged tug Sea Eagle had four people on board when it began taking on water and went aground at 8:45 p.m. on Thursday, the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) said. No injuries or pollution have been reported, and both the tug and barge are said to be in stable condition.Three of the crew members were rescued from the attached barge by Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations (CBP AMO) rescue crews.

Southeast US Bracing for Powerful Hurricane Matthew

President Barack Obama and state governors on Wednesday urged millions of people along the U.S. Southeast coast to evacuate and prepare for Hurricane Matthew as the potentially devastating storm took aim at Florida. Fugitive Treasure Hunter Arrested in Florida

An Ohio man who recovered as much as $400 million in gold from a shipwreck has been arrested in Florida after two years on the run and was scheduled to appear in federal court on Wednesday. Tommy Thompson was detained on Tuesday night at a Hilton hotel in west Boca Raton, Florida, said Barry Golden, spokesman for the U.S. Marshals Service in the Southern District of Florida. He was due to appear in federal court in West Palm Beach on Wednesday, Golden said. He is wanted for failing to appear in a federal court in Ohio in 2012. Thompson was arrested with a woman, Alison Antekeier, who also has an outstanding arrest warrant in Ohio, according to Golden. They appeared to have been living in the hotel for about two years, he said.

USCG Rescues One in Plane Crash

A man was rescued by Coast Guard aircrews after his plane crashed approximately five miles east of South Bimini, Bahamas, Monday afternoon. Rescued was David Pedroza, 43, from Boca Raton, Florida. At approximately 1:50 p.m. watchstanders at the Coast Guard 7th District in Miami received a report from the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center of an activated emergency locator transmitter from an overdue Cesna believed to be traveling from Norman Cay, Bahamas, to Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport in Florida. AFRCC reported the plane was last seen on radar descending east of South Bimini Airport in the Bahamas. Coast Guard watchstanders diverted an airborne Clearwater, Florida, based HC-130 Hercules airplane crew, who located the submerged aircraft and Pedroza in the water.

USCG Rescues 33 Cuban Migrants off Florida

The U.S. Coast Guard rescued 33 Cuban migrants from an overloaded boat taking on water off the southeast Florida coast on Wednesday, two days after 11 Cubans were pulled from the waters off the coast of Miami, officials said. Some of the 33 Cubans jumped in the water when they were spotted on Wednesday morning about 7 miles (11 km) east of Boca Raton, Florida, the Coast Guard said in a press release. "Upon our assets arriving on scene, the suspected migrants were taken aboard Coast Guard smallboat and safely transferred to a Coast Guard Cutter for basic medical attention if needed," the Coast Guard said. Two men are still missing from the group found clinging to debris from their wrecked raft on Monday.

Another Carnival Cruise Ship Medevac

U.S. Coast Gurard Miami report that a  57-year-old male passenger aboard the cruise ship 'Carnival Sensation' was medically evacuated after suffering an injury 43 nautical miles east of Boca Raton, Florida. After consulting with the flight surgeon, a medical evacuation was recommended due to the accute severity of the passenger's injury. An MH-65 helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Miami launched to respond to the report. Upon arriving on scene, the man was safely hoisted into the helicopter then transported to St. Mary’s Hospital Regional Trauma Center.

Wisdom Marine is one of the largest bulk ship owners in Taiwan with a market capitalisation of US$490-million, which represents the largest Asian IPO by market capitalisation in London to date in 2013, say law firm Proskauer . It is also the first company in the region to issue GDRs on London’s Main Market. Global law firm Proskauer advised Wisdom Marine Group in its initial public offering of Global Depositary Receipts (GDRs), admission to the Official List and trading on the Main Market of the London Stock Exchange.

On Friday evening, May 17, 83 top robotic teams from middle and high schools, after school and out-of-school programs in 23 states and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico convened at the IUPUI Natatorium for a weekend of competition and fun-filled activities.

1846-USRC McLane ran aground while attempting to cross the bar of the River Alvarado during the Mexican War. 2001- On October 15, 2001, President George W. Bush announced that a letter sent to Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle had anthrax in it. This followed a number of other anthrax attacks in Florida and New York. The EPA requested Coast Guard assistance. Members of the Atlantic Strike Team deployed to Washington, D.C., while Gulf Strike Team members were deployed to Florida. Strike team members conducted entries into the affected areas, collected samples, and assisted in the cleanup of those areas. The AST members in Washington coordinated entries into the U.S. Capitol, Hart Senate Building, the U.S. Supreme Court, and the Government Printing Office, among others.

UK Recertifies MPS Training Courses

Maritime Protective Services announced the recertification for another five years of their training courses in the United Kingdom. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has again, reapproved their Ship Security Officer(SSO) and Company Security Officer(CSO) training courses, while the reaccreditation of their Port Facility Security Officer(PFSO) training course has again, been reapproved from Transportation Security Directorate (TRANSEC) of the Department for Transport. In the United States, Maritime Protective Services has offered certified maritime security courses since 2005, having won recertification from the US Maritime Administration and Coast Guard in 2007 and 2008.

This Day in Coast Guard History – Nov. 25

1968-M/V Triple Crown foundered off the coast of Southern California with a loss of nine lives while retrieving the anchor and chain of a large offshore drilling rig. At the time of the casualty Triple Crown had eight anchors and 26,000 feet of chain on board, the weight of which caused a low freeboard aft. Three-to five waves washed over the stern and entered a stackhouse door that could not be closed due to the location of one anchor on deck. The engine flooded, the vessel listed to starboard and sank. The Coast Guard investigated. 1999-Elian Gonzalez, a 5-year old Cuban boy, was found on Thanksgiving morning clinging to an inner tube three miles off the coast of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He was among three survivors of a boating catastrophe which killed 11 migrants fleeing Cuba.

USCG Strike Teams Provide Assistance

Seventy Coast Guard Strike Team members from the National Strike Force deployed to the World Trade Towers incident, Washington D.C., and Boca Raton, Fla., to assist other agencies with response as a result of terrorist attacks. The Coast Guard Strike Force, specialists in emergency and chemical response, were requested by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to assist with air monitoring, contractor oversight and operating washing stations in New York at Ground Zero and the Staten Island Landfill evidence collection site. In Washington, Strike Force members are dressed in Level B response gear to help gather samples at the Capitol Building and the Hart Senate Office Building. Additionally, they are providing contractor oversight and are operating washing sites on scene.

Stadium Financing Has Cruise Companies Calling Foul

A plan to build a $400 million bayfront ball park for the Florida Marlins is pitting the team's millionaire owner against Miami's powerful cruise industry and its billionaire patriarch. Boca Raton, Fla.-based hedge fund manager John Henry paid $150 million cash for the 1997 World Series champion Marlins after former owner Wayne Huizenga stripped the team of its talent and alienated fans. Key to Henry's plan to rebuild the losing team's roster and dwindling fan base is a retractable-roof stadium, which he wants to pay for with a $4 per-day tax levied on cruise passengers traveling through the Port of Miami. Henry's proposal, now moving through the Florida Senate, puts him head-to-head with the lightly taxed cruise industry and Carnival Corp.
