Qatar Petroleum (QP) is expected to order 60 new liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers to serve new customers once it ramps up its annual capacity from the current 77 million tonnes (mt) to 110 mt after building four liquefaction trains by 2024.A report in Gulf Times quoted the Minister of State for Energy Affairs Saad bin Sherida al-Kaabi, who is also president and CEO of QP saying that the state-run oil company has a team, which is in talks with different ship builders worldwide.“It should be between 50 and 60 vessels that we will require to transport the expanded output of LNG. It will be very substantial number, but things will become clear with time,” he said.He added: “We have a dedicated team of experts who are already working on that element (to acquiring vessels).

The maritime industry has taken a step closer toward ballast free shipping with the award of a new approval in principle (AiP) at Marintec China on Tuesday. GTT and Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co. Ltd (DSIC) received AiP from Lloyd’s Register (LR) for their ballast-free shipping solution, a 30,000m³ B-FREE liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier design, which the developers say could combine environmentally-friendly features, increased efficiency and lower build and operating costs. “While we are still in the initial stage of the project and the design is subject to ongoing change, the initial results are indicating that we will meet our goal of having a ballast-free ship that is equal to, or better than existing conventional designs,” said Ma Yingbin, Vice Chief Engineer, DSIC.

Parker Bestobell Marine has recently completed a contract to supply cryogenic Globe and Check valves made in Sheffield, for Hoegh LNG’s series of five FSRUs (Floating Storage Regasification Units) that are being built at Hyundai shipyard (HHI) in South Korea. UK-based manufacturer of cryogenic valves Bestobell Marine said it has seen a major increase in demand for its cryogenic valves from the marine sector in the U.S. This is largely due to the new Emissions Control Areas (ECA) which is increasing the number of dual-fuel vessels being commissioned which require cryogenic valves. One of the first major contracts that Bestobell secured in the marine sector in the U.S. was for the Harvey Gulf International Marine ‘Going Green’ project. Bestobell Marine, a world leading supplier of cryogenic valves for ships, has won a major new order from Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) in South Korea to supply valves for two new vessels. Bestobell’s Globe and Check valves will be used within vessels being manufactured for Greek shipowner, Gaslog. This latest order is the result of a number of years of product development by Bestobell Marine to provide flanged Globe and Check valves to meet HHI’s unique specification. This involved a great deal of innovation to create new patterns and tooling for casting and machining the valve bodies, working closely with HHI’s design department. The contract also involved the design and approval of a new smaller version of Bestobell Marine’s unique FLIV (float level isolation) valve.

India's state-owned Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Korean firm Samsung Heavy Industries for technology partnership in constructing liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrying vessels, reports local media. “Cochin Shipyard has signed an agreement with Samsung Heavy Industries to collaborate on building LNG ships,” a shipping ministry official said. The MoU, which was inked after protracted negotiations will enable the city-based public sector yard to respond to a tender for LNG carrier construction soon-to-be-re-issued by GAIL (India). An earlier tender issued by GAIL (India) in this regard was cancelled in February this year after it failed to elicit any response.

Bestobell Valves, part of the President Engineering Group (PEGL), has supplied valves to what has become the fastest LNG (liquefied natural gas) fuelled ferry ever built. The specialist cryogenic valve manufacturer produced 70 globe, check and thermal relief valves, which were supplied to Chart Ferox, a company based in the Czech Republic, which manufactured the fuel system for the ferry. Bestobell Valves has enjoyed a long working relationship of over 20 years with Chart Ferox, a company which specializes in the manufacture of cryogenic storage vessels.

Golar LNG Limited ("Golar" or the "Company") is pleased to announce in furtherance of its recent press release regarding new buildings, that it has acquired further firm contracts to build two additional 160,000 m3 LNG carriers with the Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries Co Ltd ("Samsung"). Golar has acquired the newbuilding contracts from the affiliated party based on the original contracting terms.
