73rd Anniversary of Pearl Harbor Attack
Dec. 7, 1941 is a day that America will never forget. Claiming more than 2,400 American lives, 21 ships sunk or damaged, and more than 300 aircraft lost, the attack on Pearl Harbor goes down as one of the worst attacks on American soil. The Japanese attack came in two waves. During the first wave, six Japanese carriers launched 181 planes carrying torpedo bombers, dive bombers, horizontal bombers and fighters. Only 30 minutes later 170 more aircraft launched their attack on the Harbor. The U.S. was able to repair all but three of the ships sunk or damaged. The three ships that were beyond repair were USS Arizona (BB-39), USS Oklahoma (BB-37), and USS Utah (AG-16). This year marks the 73rd anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Navy League Past National President Daniel B. Branch Dies at 75
The Navy League of the United States mourns the death of its past national president, Capt. Daniel B. Branch Jr., USN retired. He died on Oct. 21, 2013, of complications from mesothelioma cancer at the age of 75. Memorial services will be held Thursday Oct. 24, at 2 p.m. at St. Ambrose Episcopal Church, 7520 South Boulder Road, Boulder, Colo. Burial services will be held at a future date at the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md. Dan was born in Greenbelt, Md., in 1937, and graduated in 1959 from the U.S. Naval Academy.
Canyon Offshore Appoint Stroud, Sparks
Canyon Offshore has announced the appointment of Doug Stroud to the position of vice president sales and marketing. In this newly created position, Stroud will be responsible for overseeing Canyon’s international marketing program, developing new markets and identifying new business opportunities for the company. Doug Stroud has an impressive track record marketing remotely operated vehicles and ROV services on an international basis, and has held senior positions with both ROV manufacturers and service providers. Cal Dive International Buys Canyon Offshore
Cal Dive International has acquired 85 percent of outstanding Canyon Offshore shares, with the remaining 15 percent to be acquired over the next three years. The acquisition, which is subject to the customary Hart Scott Rodino filing, is expected to close before year-end. John S. Edwards, CEO of Canyon, said, "CDI was our first customer when Canyon began operations in early 1997 and we are extremely excited to be joining the CDI group of companies and expect to be a major contributor to their continuing success. Joining the CDI group of companies greatly expands Canyons ability to further develop our global capabilities; provides access to capital, a large fleet of dynamically positioned vessels and access to considerable project management resources.
Canyon Offshore Wins Contract on Deepwater Canyon Express
Canyon Offshore has been awarded a one-year Remotely Operated Vehicle services contract to support maintenance on the Canyon Express development in Mississippi Canyon in the Gulf of Mexico. At 7,200 feet of water, Canyon Express is the deepest operating production project in the world and includes three separate gas fields, King’s Peak, Aconcagua and Camden Hills. Under the terms of the contract, Canyon will provide integrated ROV and DP vessel services on an ongoing scheduled and callout basis. Initial planned work includes a detailed baseline CP and visual survey of the East and West flowlines, and the main umbilical and methanol coiled tubing lines. In addition, Canyon will replace subsea chemical injection valves and undertake other field maintenance and intervention tasks as required.
