Great Lakes Wins Dredging Contract for Port Arthur LNG Project

Houston-based dredging contractor Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation announced it has been awarded a dredging and disposal contract in support of the Port Arthur LNG Phase 1 project.Great Lakes has been contracted by Bechtel Energy, the engineering, construction, and procurement company that’s managing the project in partnership with Sempra Infrastructure. The Port Arthur LNG project is a natural gas liquefaction and export terminal in Southeast Texas with direct access to the Gulf of Mexico.

Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Secures Dredging Contracts Worth $186.6M

Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Corporation, a U.S.-based dredging services giant said Thursday it had secured two major dredging contracts in Texas, worth $186.6 million in total.The contracts are for Freeport Harbor Channel Improvement Project, Dredging Reaches 1, 2, and 4 ($157.4 million) and Galveston Entrance Channel and Houston Ship Channel Dredging Project ($29.2 million)The Freeport Harbor Channel Improvement Project entails deepening the channel to authorized depths of 51 to 56 feet, which will make Port of Freeport the deepest port in Texas.

Polish Fairway Dredging Contract Awarded

A major modernization contract for the deepening and widening of a 62 km section of the Świnoujście – Szczecin fairway in Poland has been awarded to Van Oord and DEME Group subsidiary Dredging International.The investment by the Maritime Office in Szczecin will improve access to the Szczecin seaport and increase the port capacity to handle a growing volume of cargo.The project is a design and build contract to deepen and widen the fairway along a section of approximately 62 km from -10.5 to -12.5 m. The dredged materials will be used to build two artificial islands in the Szczecin lagoon.

Twelve Damen Stan Pontoons and Tugs Arrive in Rotterdam

Damen has concluded its latest multiple vessel transport. The shipment of ready-for-delivery vessels contains Stan Pontoons 4113, 4111, 4512, 5211 and 6316 in addition to a number of ASD 2810 Tugs. From a client’s point of view, a transport such as this means that vessels are available at competitive prices and within fast delivery times. The transport was performed by SAL Heavy Lift’s MV Svenja, which set sail from Shanghai at the end of August loaded with Stan Pontoons from Damen Yichang Shipyard, China.

Dredging at Jurong Port, Singapore

Dredging work will be carried out at Keppel Shipyard Benoi Road, off West Jurong Channel, from 28 July to 30 September. Dredging works will be carried out by the grab dredgers. The grab dredgers will be held by 4-point anchoring system and each anchor position will be marked by a yellow buoy, Fl Y 3s. The dredgers, with hopper barges in attendance, will have a circular safety working zone of 50-metre radius centred at the dredgers. Dredged materials will be transported to the designated dumping ground by the hopper barges. During the operation, the dredgers will be attended by tug boat. The tug boats will be used to shift the dredger. A safety boat will be deployed in the vicinity of the working area to warn other craft of the project.

Singapore Reclamation Work Off Temasek Fairway Revised

The working period and details of reclamation off Temasek Fairway, west of Jurong Island, have been revised. The work will now be conducted from 2 June to 1 December. Work will include reclamation, soil investigation & dredging. Dredging work will be carried out by grab dredgers. Each grab dredger will be held by 3 spuds as anchors. The dredgers, with hopper barges in attendance, will have a circular safety working zone of 50-metre radius centred at the dredgers. Dredged materials will be transported to the designated dumping ground by hopper barges. During operation, the dredgers will be attended by tug boats which will be used to shift the dredger. Soil investigation work will be carried out by means of borehole drilling using jack-up barges.

Benoi Basin Dredging through March 2014

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore has advised that dredging works will be carried out at Benoi Basin from December 13, 2013-March 12, 2014. According to the Port Marine Notice No. Dredging works will be carried out by the grab dredgers. The grab dredgers will be held by four-point anchoring system. The dredgers, with hopper barges in attendance, will have a circular safety working zone of 50-meter radius centered at the dredgers. DofD Navy Contracts for UUV's & a NJ Dredging Project

Hydroid Inc has been contracted to deliver the Navy with unmanned underwater vehicles (UUV's) and Great Lakes Dredge Dock by the USACE for placement of dredged materials at  the Keansburg, NJ, project. Hydroid Inc, Pocasset, Mass., is being awarded a $36,323,734 firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract for the procurement of unmanned underwater vehicles. The unmanned underwater vehicles provide the military force with very shallow water and shallow water mine countermeasures as well as underwater object localization tools. Work will be performed in Pocasset, Mass., and is expected to be completed by September 2018.

Green Bay Harbor Dredging Contract

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, awarded a more than $2m contract to the Roen Salvage Company of Sturgeon Bay, Wis., to dredge Green Bay Harbor. The firm will dredge 131,000 cubic yards of shoals from the harbor and place the dredged materials in a confined disposal facility. The $2,066,400 contract calls for the work to be done this summer. The deep draft harbor requires annual maintenance dredging. “This is an important harbor for Midwestern industry and the local economy,” said Lt. Col. James Davis, district engineer. “Coal, limestone, cement, salt, and liquid asphalt are among the many raw materials shipped in and out of this port.

Waterborne Freight in the UK

•    Traffic on UK domestic waters accounted for 5 per cent (126 million tonnes) of all goods lifted in the UK, and 20 per cent (51 billion tonne-kilometres) of all goods moved in 2007. •    Over the decade to 2007, goods lifted on UK waters fell by 11 per cent, and goods moved increased by 6 per cent, but there have been fluctuations during the period. In 2007, goods lifted on UK waters were at the same level as 2006 and goods moved fell by 2 per cent. •    Of the total goods moved on UK domestic waters in 2007, 68 per cent was traffic around the coast; 30 per cent was one-port traffic (to or from offshore installations, or dredged materials); and 3 per cent was inland waters traffic (including both non-seagoing traffic and seagoing traffic crossing into inland waters).

Strock, Director of Civil Works, has signed the Record of Decision (ROD) for the Columbia River Channel Improvement Project. Construction of the navigation improvements and associated ecosystem restoration features may now proceed after a cost-sharing agreement is signed. Issuance of the ROD -- a written public record under the National Environmental Policy Act explaining why the agency has decided upon a particular course of action - clears the way for the Corps' Portland District to begin work improving the federal navigation channel that stretches 103 miles between the Pacific Ocean and Portland, Ore., and Vancouver, Wash.

Corps Selects Weston/Bean for $75M Dredging Contract

NY/NJ Port Authority Authorizes Dredging Study

The Port Authority Board of Commissioners has authorized a study harbor dredging in the Port of New York and New Jersey to identify, develop and explore innovative and cost-effective ways to remove and dispose of sediment from the port's channels and berths. The goal of the $4 million study is to find the most environmentally sensitive and the most effective way to deepen the port's channels to 45-ft. and then to 50-ft. The New IMO Treaty to Ban TBT

The Diplomatic Conference held (October 1-5, 2001) by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in London adopted the Draft Convention prepared by The Marine Environmental Protection Committee (MEPC) of IMO for the "Control of Harmful Anti-fouling Systems for Ships." The Convention has been developed to immediately ban the use of Tributyltin (TBT) globally in antifouling paints to "protect the marine environment". The ban on TBT has come about because TBT has detrimental effects on non-target marine organisms. In November 1999, IMO agreed that a Treaty be developed by the MEPC to ensure a ban on the application of TBT based antifouling paints by January 1, 2003, and a total ban on the use of TBT by January 1, 2008.

MHI Receives Dredger Order

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) has received an order for a large size dredge from the Suez Canal Authority of Egypt and has signed the contract recently. The vessel, which will be the largest dredger ever built in Japan with a hopper capacity, will be built at the Kobe Shipyard and Machinery Works of MHI and is slated for the delivery in June, 2004. To date, MHI has delivered six dredgers to the Suez Canal Authority. This order is the first dredger order for MHI to receive from the Suez Canal Authority in the past 18 years, to which MHI delivered a dredger with the hopper capacity of 6,500 cubic meters in 1984, which was ordered in 1983. The vessel is of a trailing suction hopper dredger having hold capacity of 10,000 cubic meters.
