Turkey's Karpowership Among S. Africa's Preferred Bidders for Emergency Power Supply

South Africa's government has selected eight preferred bidders, including Turkey's Karpowership, to provide emergency electricity and help prop up the country's ailing power supply, Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe said on Thursday.The tender for 2,000 megawatts (MW), launched two years ago when South Africa suffered some of the worst power cuts in a decade, aimed to find the cheapest and quickest options to ease a shortage that has cost the continent's most industrialized economy billions of dollars."The evaluation process has resulted in the selection of eight preferred bids totaling 1…

Two Killed In Kosovo Power Plant Blast, Supplies Hit

A hydrogen tank exploded at Kosovo's second biggest power plant on Friday, killing two people and injuring 14, officials said. The 40-year-old Kosovo A plant, considered one of the worst polluters in Europe, was shut down following the blast that was heard in the capital, Pristina, some 10 km (6 miles) away. The explosion threatened electricity supplies in a country already plagued by blackouts. Power imports were increased to cover demand. "We have found two bodies," Edmond Nulleshi, a manager at the Kosovo's Energy Corporation (KEK), told Reuters. Local television footage showed soldiers rescuing a worker who had been trapped in the building for more than five hours. An investigation has been launched into the incident.

Ireland/UK HVDC Subsea Cable Link Commissioned by ABB

ABB commissions world's highest capacity HVDC Light underwater power link, a 500 MW HVDC inter-connection between Ireland and the UK enables leveraging of wind energy and facilitates power flows between the two countries. ABB has delivered the East West Interconnector to EirGrid, the Irish transmission system operator. The 500-megawatt (MW) transmission connection is the highest capacity link of its kind, based on voltage source converter (VSC) technology, to go into commercial operation. The interconnector establishes an important link between the Irish and U.K.

Subsea Icelandic HV Cable Link Contract for ABB

The High-voltage submarine and underground cable link will bring reliable power to a remote island fishing community. ABB has received an order worth around $10 million, from Landsnet, the Icelandic transmission system operator, to supply a high-voltage submarine and underground power-cable system that will transport electricity from the mainland to the volcanic island of Heimaey. Heimaey is the only inhabited island of the Vestmannaeyiar archipelago off the southern coast of Icleand.

Ever Safety Launched in Japan

Ever Safety, the ninth of ten 7024 TEU S-series vessels being built for Evergreen in Japan, was launched today (June 5, 2007) at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ Kobe shipyard. She was named by S S Lin (Lin Sun-san), Second Vice Group Chairman of the Evergreen Group, while the ceremonial rope cutting, sending the ship down the slipway, was performed by Mrs Shigemi Matsuda, the wife of Akira Matsuda, Senior Executive Vice President and Member of the Board of the Marubeni Corporation. Due for delivery in October 2007, Ever Safety is scheduled to join Evergreen Line’s transpacific service. The eight earlier vessels are currently in the process of being transferred to Evergreen Line’s new China Europe Shuttle (CES) service that will offer a fast link between Asia and North Europe.

Green Ships for Evergreen

The Evergreen Group’s S-series vessels are built with the standard exceed all national and international regulations regarding environmental protection. In recognition of the ships’ green credentials, Ever Superb, the fifth in the series of vessels to enter service, was awarded Ship of the Year 2006 by Lloyd’s List Maritime Asia. The S-series vessels incorporate design features such as double-skinned hulls and fuel oil tanks located in protected locations within the transverse bulkhead spaces, thus minimizing the risk of oil pollution. A high capacity oily water separator enables the oil content of waste water to be reduced to just 15 ppm while much larger separated bilge oil and bilge holding tanks provide more storage capacity…

Evergreen Containership Launched

Ever Strong, the seventh in a series of ten 7024 TEU S-type vessels being built for Evergreen in Japan, took to the water for the first time on November 22 at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ Kobe shipyard. She was named by Evergreen Group Vice Group Chairman S S Lin and launched by Lin Mei-Yin, wife of Paul Liao who, prior to his current role as Chairman of the Breeze Center shopping mall development in Taipei, was a key figure in Taiwan’s international trade sector. Due for delivery in March 2007, Ever Strong is scheduled to enter service on the Transpacific Southwest (TPS) service linking Southern China, Hong Kong and Taiwan with the West Coast of North America.

Steady as she goes for Evergreen

Ever Steady, the latest in a series of ten 7,024 TEU S-type vessels being built for Evergreen in Japan, has taken to the water for the first time. It was launched at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ Kobe shipyard on August 22 at a ceremony hosted by Vice Group Chairman of Evergreen Group and Chairman of Evergreen Marine Corp, Chang Kuo-Cheng (K C Chang), and is due for delivery in December 2006, scheduled to enter service on the HTW service linking Southern China, Hong Kong and Taiwan with the West Coast of North America. Ever Steady is the sixth vessel in this series. Four have already entered service with the Evergreen Group’s UK affiliate Hatsu Marine Ltd and the fifth, Ever Superb, is due for delivery at the end of this month.

Hatsu Completes Latest Phase of Expansion

Hatsu Marine Ltd., has added two more post-Panamax container vessels, the Hatsu Crystal and Hatsu Smile, to its worldwide fleet. The 8,063 TEU C-type vessel Hatsu Crystal has been phased into the Evergreen Group’s CEM service where slots are allocated between Evergreen Marine Corp., Italia Marittima and Hatsu. The CEM service links China with North Europe and the Mediterranean, and is now served by an identical fleet of C-type vessels, four provided by Evergreen Marine and two each from Hatsu and Italia Marittima. The Hatsu Crystal is on long-term charter by Hatsu from the German shipowner Conti Reederei. The 7,024 TEU S-type vessel Hatsu Smile has entered service on Hatsu’s WAE route, a pendulum service linking the West Coast of North America, Asia and North Europe.

Mitsubishi launches Ever Spring

Ever Spring is the fifth in a series of ten S-types being built for the Evergreen Group by Mitsubishi. Three have already been delivered to the Evergreen Group’s UK affiliate Hatsu Marine Ltd and a fourth, Hatsu Smile, is due for delivery at the beginning of June. The honor of cutting the ceremonial rope sending the traditional bottle of champagne against its bow to launch and send Ever Spring on her way down the slipway was given to Mr K C Chang’s wife, Mrs Tseng Chiung-Hui. The Evergreen Group is taking delivery of 18 large post-Panamax containerships over the period 2005 to 2008 – ten S-types and eight 8063TEU C-types – allowing the Group companies to upgrade existing services and phase out older vessels.

Evergreen Calls on Industry to Protect the Environment

Evergreen Vice Group Chairman Chang Kuo-Cheng urged the international transportation industry to “come together – ocean carriers, ports, terminals, inland carriers and shippers – to develop new ways to protect the environment for future generations while we maintain the efficiency of our global network”. “At past industry conferences this issue might be dismissed as commercially insignificant – not something with which we as business people, transportation professionals, need be concerned. Once we have developed this foundation, Chang said: “We must educate. We must raise the awareness of the world’s people to the importance of our industry and why investment is so critical – investment from everyone worldwide.
