The Charleston Harbor Deepening Project was named one of six “new starts” and received $17.5 million in construction funding in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Fiscal Year 17 Work Plan released today, allowing construction on the project to begin this fall as scheduled. Charleston also received $16.1 million in operations and maintenance dollars, which provide for the routine maintenance dredging of the harbor necessary for construction begin. Collectively the funds allocated in the Work Plan allow Charleston to continue moving forward and preparing for construction. “This is monumental news for the Charleston Harbor Deepening Project…

Dennis Rochford, president of the Maritime Exchange for the Delaware River and Bay, announced that President Obama’s FY17 proposed budget includes $33 million for the Delaware River Deepening Project. In addition to the Administration’s funding, an additional $22 million was included for the project in the FY16 Army Corps of Engineers' current fiscal year work plan. This combined funding of $55 million, and a 35 percent match from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, will move this project toward completion by the end of calendar year 2017. Completing the project allows the Delaware River regional port community to take full advantage of expected opportunities due to the expansion of the Panama Canal.

The 2012 Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) military and civilian Engineers of the Year award was announced Feb. 2 by NAVFAC Commander Rear Admiral Christopher J. Mossey. Senior Civil Engineer Bruce Seamans at NAVFAC Atlantic in Norfolk, Va. was selected as the civilian Engineer of the Year, and Lt. Christopher Casne, Facilities Engineering Acquisition Division (FEAD) team leader at NAVFAC Hawaii in Pearl Harbor, was selected as the military Engineer of the Year. “These two civil engineers represent the best of the Navy,” said NAVFAC Chief Engineer and Director of Capital Improvements Joseph Gott. Seamans served as the chief engineer for the Kandahar Provincial Reconstruction Team and Regional Command South from August 2010 to July 2011.

Four Naval Sea System Command (NAVSEA) warfare center scientists and engineers were among those recognized, July 23, at the annual Top Navy Scientists and Engineers of the Year award ceremony at the Pentagon. As NAVSEA field activities, Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) and Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) are the Navy's principal research, development, test and evaluation (RDT&E), analysis and assessment activities for ship and submarine platform, including machinery technology for surface combat systems, ordnance, mines, and strategic systems products and support. Thackrah, today honored 46 of the Department of the Navy's top scientists and engineers at the second annual Top Navy Scientists and Engineers of the Year award ceremony at the Pentagon, May 29. The Department of the Navy has over 35,000 scientists and engineers pursuing research, development, acquisition and sustainment. The award was established to honor those who reached superior technical achievements and to promote continued scientific and engineering excellence. "This award ceremony recognizes the top scientists and engineers in the Department of the Navy," Thackrah said.
