US Navy Tests Latest Aegis Weapon System

The U.S. Navy conducted a series of cooperative air defense test exercises with the Spanish navy that culminated in live missile firing events using the latest Aegis Weapon System baseline July 20-21. The event was not only the first interoperability test of the latest Aegis Baseline 9.C1 with a foreign ship, but also the first combined Combat Systems Ship Qualification Trial with that country's navy since 2007. Guided-missile destroyer USS Arleigh Burke (DDG 51) and Spanish frigate Cristobol Colon (F 105) participated in the testing. In addition to live missile firing events, Tactical Data Link interoperability exercises were held July 12-14. "While our combat systems suites are slightly different, the way we operate and execute missions are quite similar," said Cmdr.

SSI Hires Holder for US Sales

SSI has hired CAD/CAM specialist Robert Holder as part of its sales force in the U.S. market. According to SSI, the hiring is intended to meet the expanding demand for SSI's design and manufacturing solutions in the shipbuilding and offshore industries. Holder, SSI's new Sales Account Executive for Enterprise Solutions, will help businesses assess SSI’s expanded capabilities, including the expanded ShipConstructor CAD/CAM product line, EnterprisePlatform product line and new pricing options that SSI now offers. He will be based in the Gulf Coast Region but will provide technical consultation to the shipbuilding and offshore industry throughout the United States.

US Navy Evaluating SEWIP for LCS

The U.S. Navy is evaluating a scaled-down version of the Surface Electronic Warfare Improvement Program (SEWIP) system for potential incorporation on future Littoral Combat Ships (LCS), Naval Sea Systems Command announced, Nov. 20. SEWIP is an evolutionary development block upgrade program for the SLQ-32 Electronic Warfare (EW) System and will be designated as AN/SLQ-32C(V)6. Still in the early stages of development, its purpose is to provide LCS with an improved electronic warfare suite to improve the ship's defense capabilities.

Standard Missile Shows Versatility with “Juliet” Flight Test

The Navy executed a successful flight test of the surface-to-air Standard Missile-6 (SM-6) at White Sands Missile Range Aug. 14. During flight test “Juliet,” the Navy examined the missile's ability to intercept a subsonic, low- altitude target over land. Juliet is one of 10 follow-on operational test and evaluation (FOT&E) events planned for SM-6's missile performance and demonstration. "This event demonstrated SM-6's ability to detect and engage a slow moving target in the presence of complex land clutter," said Jim Schuh, Anti-Air Warfare Missiles technical director at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab, which is among the Navy's SM-6 partners. The SM-6 provides an over-the-horizon engagement capability when launched from an Aegis warship.

New AVEVA ISM Bridges the Gap

AVEVA launches a new application for governing asset information using a standards-based methodology. AVEVA announced the launch of AVEVA Information Standards Manager (AVEVA ISM), a software product that enables both EPC contractors and asset Owner Operators to achieve greater control over critical engineering information across their projects and enterprises. It does this by rationalising existing class libraries and imposing consistent and compliant standards that improve information quality and reduce both project and operational risk. AVEVA ISM can be rapidly deployed and is fully compatible with software systems from other vendors.

Iridium Communications Inc. today announced Iridium GO!, the industry’s first portable satellite hotspot that connects to any smartphone or tablet, dramatically extending voice and data coverage for personal devices when they are out of range of cellular networks. Safety Drives Digital Plant Upgrade, Says Aveva

Aveva’s new business paper examines how 3D laser surveying technology can transform brownfield asset information. Aveva announced its publication of a new business paper, Seeing Through the Fog, describing how recent advances in both 3D laser surveying and Information Management technology combine to enable the capture and use of an accurate digital counterpart of a brownfield plant. It explains how owner operators of existing facilities can now take advantage of the kind of "digital plant" information asset created in new-build projects.

Vietnam University Selects Intergraph SmartMarine Enterprise

PetroVietnam University (PVU) joined the Intergraph Education Grant Program. PVU is located in the offshore oil and gas hub of southern Vietnam, and was established to focus on the development of the country's oil and gas industry. The Vietnamese university recognized that it needs to equip its students with the necessary skills and knowledge so that they are ready to apply the tools that employers already use when they join the work force. PVU will provide its students with access to SmartMarine Enterprise solutions, including SmartMarine 3D, SmartPlant Review, SmartPlant Instrumentation, SmartPlant Electrical, SmartPlant P&ID and SmartSketch. Intergraph's ruled-based technology features unique automation capabilities, which was a compelling factor in PVU's decision.

Brazilian joint venture will use SmartMarine® Enterprise components for project with oil giant Petrobras. Tome Ferrostaal, a joint venture between Tome Engenharia and Ferrostaal in Brazil, has selected Intergraph® SmartMarine® Enterprise solutions, distributed by Sisgraph, as part of a project with Petrobras, one of the world's largest energy companies. Intergraph's enterprise engineering software will be used to construct the topsides of six identical floating, production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessels, which will be built in Brazil. Sisgraph, based in Sao Paulo, Brazil, has been a distributor of Intergraph solutions in South America for more than 30 years. Intergraph and Sisgraph are part of Hexagon.

Australian Offshore LNG Project Chooses Intergraph Software

Intergraph® SmartPlant® Enterprise selected by operator, Inpex, to manage information for mega-project, Ichthys LNG. Inpex has implemented SmartPlant Enterprise solutions for the Ichthys LNG Project, including SmartPlant Enterprise for Owner Operators (SPO) as its information management system, SmartPlant 3D and SmartMarine® 3D (collectively known as Smart 3D), SmartPlant Instrumentation, SmartPlant P&ID and SmartPlant Electrical. The Ichthys LNG Project is a joint venture between Inpex and Total, Tokyo Gas and other participants. Gas from the Ichthys field, in the Browse Basin approximately 200 kilometers offshore Western Australia, will undergo preliminary processing offshore to remove water and extract condensate.
