Maersk Tests Containerized Battery System

Danish shipping giant Maersk will install a containerized 600 kWh marine battery system on board the 4,500 TEU Maersk Cape Town in December 2019 to improve vessel performance and reliability while reducing CO2 emissions.“This trial will provide a greater understanding of energy storage that will support Maersk in moving towards further electrification of its fleet and port terminals. Maersk will continue to facilitate, test, and develop low-carbon solutions on our journey to become carbon neutral by 2050,” explains Søren Toft, Maersk COO.Propelling marine vessels with battery power alone is still years away from being a technically- and economically viable option.

Power Play: Engine Suppliers Prepare for 2020

Kjeld Åbo, Chairman of CIMAC (the International Council on Combustion Engines) Fuels Working Group and Director Customer Support, Two Stroke Marine at MAN Diesel & Turbo, has said that the IMO’s proposed 0.5 percent marine fuel sulfur content limit was not unexpected but that there were a number of practical and strategic issues that needed to be addressed if the new regulations were to be implemented successfully by 2020. This article looks at how manufacturers of marine engines are rising to the challenge of meeting the IMO’s new sulfur oxides (Sox) emissions standards.

Wärtsilä Repowers Italian Ferry

The Italian ferry company Moby S.p.A has chosen Wärtsilä to carry out the repowering of its passenger ferry MV Moby Zaza, the final vessel in a series of repowering projects that started with MV Moby Corse and continued with MV Moby Kiss. The scope of the agreement covers equipment as well as commissioning and systems integration. The Wärtsilä equipment provided include four new auxiliary generating sets with digital automatic voltage regulators, seawater systems with complete cooling circuit that allows operating in high sea water temperatures, exhaust gas system silencers and fuel systems. The new, state-of-the-art equipment will extend the lifecycle of the installation. As the existing 30-year-old equipment is replaced, the vessel's environmental footprint is considerably reduced.

DNV GL Approvals for SAACKE Scrubbers

Classification increases planning certainty for exhaust gas scrubber operators. The classification society DNV GL has certified the SAACKE exhaust gas scrubber based on soot separation using a dry process. This ensures that the innovative system, which was initially installed in 2013 on the tanker MT Levana, owned by the Carl Büttner shipping company, can now be operated without restriction. "Many scrubbers manufactured by market competitors currently operate with special permits. This means that the operator is exposed to the risk that the investment may not pay off.

Caterpillar Marine Power Systems announced the EPA Tier 2 Certification of all MaK engine platforms with cylinder volumes of above thirty liters. Included in the certification are the M 32 C, M 43 C, M 46 DF as well as the recently announced M 34 DF engine platform. The certification of the MaK range provides customers operating in the American market, specifically in the commercial and offshore marine markets, a spectrum of power nodes to meet emissions regulations on U.S. flagged vessels.

Caterpillar Develops Second Dual Fuel Engine

Caterpillar Marine Power Systems announce the development of the MaK M 34 DF, a new marine dual fuel engine platform for the commercial marine industry. The M 34 DF dual fuel engine boasts a power rating of 500 kW per cylinder at 720 and 750 rpm in diesel and gas modes, and will share the same footprint as the highly successful M 32 C engine series. The M 34 DF will be capable of running on natural gas as an alternative to marine diesel oil or large and complex scrubber installations for Emission Control Areas (ECA) operation as of 2015. First engine deliveries are foreseen for October 2014.

London Places Power Turbine Order

H. Cegielski – Poznan S.A. has ordered two MAN Diesel TCS-PTG18 Power Turbine systems from MAN Diesel’s Turbocharger Business Unit. The TCS-PTGs will boost the efficiency of two environmentally friendly, diesel power plants to be constructed by Land & Marine for renewable energy company Blue-NG in London. A H.
